History

The present Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto (Latin: Archidioecesis Theatina-Vastensis; Italian: Arcidiocesi di Chieti-Vasto; Neapolitan: Arcidiocesi 'e Chiete-Vasto) took its name in 1986, when two dioceses long governed by a single bishop were merged into one. Chieti itself had held archdiocesan rank since 1526, when Pope Clement VII promoted it. The city of Chieti lies about 8 miles (14 km) south-west of Pescara, the Adriatic port.
