Established on April 2, 1928 as the Territorial Prelature of Rio Magdalena from the Dioceses of Nueva Pamplona and Socorro y San Gil, promoted to apostolic vicariate in 1950 and to diocese on October 27, 1962. Its cathedral is the Catedral del Sagrado Corazon; Bishop Ovidio Giraldo Velasquez has served since May 29, 2020.
