Latin-rite metropolitan archdiocese in Castile and Leon, Spain, erected as the Diocese of Burgos in 1075 and elevated to archdiocese on 22 October 1574. Its seat is the Cathedral of St Mary in Burgos, a UNESCO World Heritage Gothic cathedral, and its suffragans are Bilbao, Osma-Soria, Palencia and Vitoria. Archbishop Mario Iceta Gavicagogeascoa has led the archdiocese since 2020.

History

Among the Metropolitan sees of the Latin Church in Spain is the Archdiocese of Burgos (Latin: Archidioecesis Burgensis). Four suffragan dioceses make up its ecclesiastical province: Bilbao, Osma-Soria, Palencia, and Vitoria.

  • Archidiócesis de Burgos holds first gala of “Piedras Vivas”

    The Archdiocese of Burgos held the first gala for the Piedras Vivas project at the Burgos Cathedral. Organized under the Cabildo Metropolitano de Burgos, the event brought together local businesses, non-profit associations, and potential supporters. The project has 100 participants acting as ambassadors for the cathedral. During the gala, organizers presented work in the areas of charity for vulnerable people, missions to promote evangelization, and the conservation or restoration of religious heritage. These projects take place in Burgos, the province, and on other continents. Félix José Castro Lara, dean-president of the Cabildo, thanked the 100 participants for joining the project. Jaime Prado, the director of development and strategy for the Burgos Cathedral and the person responsible for the Piedras Vivas patronage and aid project, conducted the gala.

  • Pope Leo XIV to celebrate 112th World Migrant and Refugee Day

    Pope Leo XIV has designated unaccompanied migrant minors as the focus for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Using the theme "Even just one of these little ones," the Pope's message highlights the vulnerability of children within global migration flows. The Diocese of Ávila will hold a Mass for the occasion at 13:00 on Sunday, September 27, at the San Vicente parish. In Burgos, a prayer vigil was scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, at the Salesas church, followed by a meeting of nations on September 26. The Church of Burgos reported that its organizations supporting migrant minors assisted 12,380 people over the last year, with 28.4% being accompanied minors.

  • Ernesto Pérez premieres Passion of the Holy Christ of Burgos

    Ernesto Pérez premiered his play, Passion of the Holy Christ of Burgos, at the Burgos Cathedral to mark the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The production featured more than 40 actors from various theater groups and the Villadiego parish choir. Pérez wrote the play nearly 10 years ago to share the history of the Holy Christ of Burgos carving and to restore its universal devotion. The playwright previously wrote La catedral soñada, which depicted King Fernando III el Santo and Bishop Mauricio working with the cathedral chapter.
