Latin-rite diocese in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, erected on 5 July 1183 by Pope Lucius III shortly after the city's reconquest from the Moors. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Toledo, with its seat at the Gothic cathedral of Cuenca (Cathedral of St Mary and St Julian), begun at the end of the 12th century. Bishop Jose Maria Yanguas Sanz leads the diocese.

Cuenca, in the ecclesiastical province of Toledo in Spain, is the seat of a Latin Church diocese: the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cuenca (Latin: Dioecesis Conchensis).

  • Diocese of Cuenca launches Child Equilibrist program

    The Family Guidance Center of the Diocese of Cuenca has launched the Niño Equilibrista (Child Equilibrist) program to support children of separated and divorced parents. According to Marta Guillén Tena, director of the center, the program uses a mutual support group model to help children navigate the balancing of loyalties that often occurs during parental separations and legal disputes. The program aims to provide a space where children feel heard and have their pain acknowledged. Guillén Tena stated that the initiative helps children understand they can love both parents equally and reassures them that their parents will remain their parents regardless of the separation.

    Parishes in the Diocese of Cuenca are inviting families to enroll children in catechesis for the upcoming pastoral course. The diocese is also encouraging adults who have not yet received the sacrament of confirmation to participate. Parishes describe the program as a way for children and adolescents to grow spiritually and develop values that complement their school education. Local parishes suggest that enrolling children in the nearest parish provides them with a sense of community and reflection. The call for enrollment follows a period of high sacramental activity in the diocese. Official data from the end of 2025 shows that 502 catechists volunteered to support children, youth, and families. During that year, 779 people celebrated their First Communion and 880 people received the sacrament of confirmation.

  • Bishop José María Yanguas opens 2026-2027 academic year at Diocese of Cuenca seminaries

    Bishop José María Yanguas officially opened the 2026-2027 academic year for the Diocesan Seminary and the San Julián Theological Institute of Cuenca on Wednesday, September 23. The event included a Mass followed by an academic ceremony attended by professors, priests, seminarists, and their families. The seminary currently has 19 seminarists, consisting of 12 from the Diocese of Cuenca and seven from Albacete. During the ceremony, Germán Jiménez Tirado delivered the inaugural lecture, and the rector, José Antonio Fernández Moreno, addressed the attendees. The San Julián Theological Institute remains open for theology student registrations until September 30. The institute's student body includes both consecrated persons and laypeople studying philosophy and theology.
