History

The Archdiocese of Granada (Latin: archidioecesis Granatensis) is a Latin ecclesiastical province of the Catholic Church in Spain with deep roots: it began as the Diocese of Elvira, which existed from the 3rd century through the 10th, was re-founded as the diocese of Granada in 1437, and was raised to a metropolitan archdiocese by Pope Alexander VI on 10 December 1492. Almería, Cartagena, Guadix, Jaén, and Málaga serve as its suffragan sees.
