Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol

History

Four suffragan dioceses make up the ecclesiastical province of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela, which covers Galicia in the northwest of Spain, and Mondoñedo-Ferrol (Latin: Dioecesis Mindoniensis-Ferrolensis), a Latin diocese, is the northernmost of them. Long before, this area held Britonia, a settlement established by expatriate Britons in the wake of the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain.

• Unknown persons desecrate the tabernacle of a church in Lugo and scatter the consecrated hosts in the square

  Unknown persons desecrated the tabernacle at the Sacred Heart of Mary parish church in Guitiriz, Lugo, on Saturday, September 19. According to the Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol, the individuals removed the tabernacle from its place, forced the lock, and opened it to take a silver ciborium. The perpetrators then scattered the consecrated hosts in the town square and stole the silver vessel. The diocese described the incident as a very serious act and a direct affront to the Eucharist. In an official statement, the diocese noted that the event deeply wounds the religious feelings of Catholics and the Guitiriz parish community. Bishop Fernando Garcia Cadiñanos will preside over a Mass of reparation at the church on September 29.

• Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol to hold Clergy Assembly

  The Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol will hold its annual Diocesan Clergy Assembly on September 29 at the Mondoñedo Seminary. Bishop Fernando Garcia Cadiñanos will preside over the meeting, which begins at 10:30 a.m. to prepare priests for the upcoming pastoral year. The assembly brings together most diocesan priests to discuss the Church's priorities for the coming months. • Pope Leo XIV inspires Penitentiary Way of St. James

  Santiago de Compostela will host the Penitentiary Way of St. James on October 3, bringing together inmates, volunteers, and professionals from 23 prisons across Spain. Organized by the Department of Penitentiary Pastoral of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, the event commemorates the feast of Our Lady of Mercy, the patron saint of prisons. The theme for this year, "God dreams a better version of you," comes from words Pope Leo XIV spoke to inmates during his visit to the Brians 1 prison in Barcelona. Participants, including more than 150 inmates, educators, and officials, will walk the final stretch to the Obradoiro Square after completing their individual itineraries. The day includes testimonies, a visit to the tomb of St. James, and a seasonal Mass at the cathedral. Archbishop Florencio Roselló of Pamplona, who directs the Department of Penitentiary Pastoral, will preside over the Mass. He will be joined by the Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, Francisco José Prieto, and the Bishop of Mondoñedo-Ferrol, Fernando García Cadiñanos.

• Acción Católica Xeral organizes Cuatro40 encounter in Mondoñedo

  Acción Católica Xeral will host the Cuatro40 encounter at the Mondoñedo Seminary from September 25 to 27. The event is open to participants from the Diocese of Astorga and all dioceses in Galicia. The program includes personal testimonies, experiential activities, and scripture reading. This gathering is part of a project for parish renewal and first announcement intended to help parishes become more evangelizing and encourage personal encounters with Christ. The encounter serves as the start of a longer process. Following the initial weekend, seven spaced meetings will take place over the following months to provide community and formation. This second stage acts as a pre-catechumenate to help establish stable discipleship groups within local parishes.

• Fernando García Cadiñanos represents CEE at European social justice meeting

  Bishop Fernando García Cadiñanos represented the Spanish Episcopal Conference at a European meeting on social justice in Rome from September 22 to 24. Organized by the Sección para las Cuestiones Sociales of the CCEE, the meeting addressed the theme of "Economía, Justicia Social y Solidaria entre las Naciones." Cadiñanos, the president of the Subcomisión Episcopal para las Migraciones y la Movilidad Humana, attended to share the experiences and concerns of the Church in Spain regarding human dignity, social cohesion, and international justice. Participants analyzed the role of the economy in building societies centered on the person. The program began on Tuesday, September 22, with a Mass presided over by Bishop János Székely of Szombathely, Hungary, who is responsible for the organizing section.
