Diocese of Urgell

History

Rooted in the historical Catalan County of Urgell, the Diocese of Urgell (Catalan pronunciation: [uɾˈ(d)ʒeʎ]; Latin: Diœcesis Urgellensis) is a Latin Church diocese in Catalonia (Spain) whose territory also embraces the whole of the sovereign Principality of Andorra. Its origins reach back to the 5th century AD, possibly earlier, and while its lands include those of the historical County of Urgell, its present borders differ from that county's.

• Parish of Artesa de Segre makes pilgrimage to Schoenstatt Shrine

  Pilgrims from the Parish of the Assumption of Artesa de Segre visited the Schoenstatt Sanctuary in Valldoreix on Saturday, September 19. Led by their rector, Cristian Casamitjana, the group traveled to the sanctuary in Barcelona while it celebrates its Jubilee Year. The group met with the sanctuary's custodian sisters and a group of young people who previously conducted missions in Artesa de Segre during Holy Week. During the visit, Sister Maria del Mar Parès explained the history and characteristics of the sanctuary. After visiting the oratory of Father Joseph Kentenich, the movement's founder, the pilgrims attended Mass celebrated by Father Casamitjana. The pilgrimage concluded with a meal shared with the Sisters of Mary. The group expressed anticipation for the return of the young missionaries to Artesa de Segre for the upcoming Holy Week celebrations.

• Diocese of Urgell organizes pilgrimage to Segòvia, Fontiveros and Àvila

  The Diocese of Urgell will hold a diocesan pilgrimage to Segovia, Fontiveros, and Avila from October 13 to 16. The trip commemorates the Jubilee Year of Saint John of the Cross, marking 300 years since his canonization and 100 years since he was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. The itinerary follows the theme "From mysticism to mission" and visits sites connected to Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa of Jesus. Participants will stay in seminaries and spiritual centers to facilitate prayer and reflection on how the mystical experiences of these saints relate to a call to mission. • Bishop Josep-Lluís Serrano attends inauguration of Fundació Sant Hospital renovation

  Bishop Josep-Lluís Serrano attended the inauguration of renovated second and third floors at the Fundació Sant Hospital in La Seu d'Urgell on Friday, September 18. The new facilities include Atenció Intermèdia, Centre de Dia, and Residència Assistida. The works began in early 2024 to adapt the spaces to current fire protection regulations and incorporate rooms with bathrooms, new areas for professionals, and larger common areas. During the renovation, residents were hosted in the Sant Tomàs wing on the third floor of the Seminari diocesà d’Urgell. Bishop Serrano was accompanied by the rector of the parròquia de Sant Ot, Mn. Josep Chisvert. He was received by the president of the Patronat de la Fundació Sant Hospital, Joan Barrera, and the directora-gerent, Palmira Borràs. Other attendees included the diputat de Salut Pública de la diputació de Lleida, Oscar Martinez, and the presidenta del Consell Comarcal de l’Alt Urgell, Josefina Lladós.
