The Archdiocese of Foggia-Bovino is a Latin Church metropolitan see in Apulia, Italy, formed in 1986 from the union of the dioceses of Foggia and Bovino. It was elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese in 1979 and its suffragans include Cerignola-Ascoli Satriano, Lucera-Troia, Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo, and San Severo.

History

In Apulia, southern Italy, the Archdiocese of Foggia-Bovino (Latin: Archidioecesis Fodiana-Bovinensis) took shape in two steps: the bishopric of Foggia was promoted to an archdiocese in 1979, and in 1986 the bishopric of Bovina was merged into it, its name entering the title.

  • Parish of Arpinova to hold week-long festival in honor of Santa Teresa di Gesù Bambino

    The parish of Arpinova will host a week of celebrations honoring Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus from September 26 to October 4. The program combines liturgical services with music, films, and community gatherings. The festivities begin on Saturday, September 26, at 19:00 with an opening Mass led by Father Daniele D’Ecclesia, the parish priest of Foggia Cathedral. A community celebration with music by DJ Alessandro will follow. On Sunday, September 27, Deacon Luca Zizzari will lead the Liturgy of the Word and confessions at 19:15. This evening includes a buffet and music by Lorenzo and Giorgia Cecere alongside local youth. On Tuesday, September 29, Francesco Cicolella will host a free screening of the film “Un paese quasi perfetto” at Viale Ricciotti at 19:00. The central event takes place on Thursday, October 1, the feast day of Saint Thérèse. A procession will begin at 18:00, led by Father Vito Cecere, a parish priest and provincial chaplain for the State Police, accompanied by a musical band and fireworks.

  • Diocese of Foggia–Bovino celebrates feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 21

    The Diocese of Foggia–Bovino celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 21 in San Marco in Lamis. The religious life of the town has centered on devotion to the Virgin Mary since the late 1500s and early 1600s. According to the Diocese of Foggia–Bovino, priest Costantino Iannacone played a central role in the local cult. Records in the Diocesan Archive of Foggia state that Iannacone witnessed movements of the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and received a message from the Virgin to prepare for death by sharing in the sufferings of Christ. Following these experiences, Iannacone built a church dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary near the old quarantine station of Saints Vito and Rocco. The church was canonically established in 1717 and completed with a bell tower in 1718. Lay groups dedicated to the devotion merged in 1749 to form the Confraternity of the Seven Sorrows, which was affiliated with the Servi di Maria. The group became an archconfraternity formally affiliated with the Order in 1834, receiving royal assent in 1841.
