History

Extending over the entire department of Maine-et-Loire, the Diocese of Angers (Latin: Dioecesis Andegavensis; French: Diocèse d'Angers) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in France, with its episcopal see at Angers Cathedral in the city of Angers. Under the old regime and under the Concordat it was a suffragan see of the Archdiocese of Tours; since the general reorganization of the French hierarchy of 8 December 2002 it has been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Rennes, Dol, and Saint-Malo. In 2022 the diocese had one priest for every 2,944 Catholics.

  • Diocese of Angers participates in European Heritage Days

    Diocese of Angers sites participated in the European Heritage Days held on September 19 and 20. The event allowed the public to visit various monuments across the Maine-et-Loire territory, including the La Pouëze chapel in Haut-Anjou. Built around 1472 at the request of Louis XI, the listed chapel contains architectural and artistic features such as vaults, a portal, an altar, and a statue of Saint Emerance. Other available activities included climbing the church of the Sacred Heart in Cholet to view its carillon and visiting the "La Vendée chemilloise" exhibition at Saint-Pierre Church in Chemillé. Additionally, the association SOS Calvaires opened its doors at Le Lion d’Angers on Saturday, September 19. During this visit, Bishop Delmas blessed a cross that the association created for the Pope's vigil at the Stade de France on September 25.

  • Diocese of Angers hosts Jewish-Christian friendship evening

    The Diocese of Angers hosted an evening for Jewish-Christian friendship on Wednesday, September 23, at the UCO Bedouelle amphitheater. The event featured authors Isabelle and Antoine Cherreau, who presented their graphic novel, Like a Jew in France. The evening was organized by the Judeo-Christian Friendship group with support from the diocesan service for relations with Judaism and the Israelite religious and cultural association of Maine-et-Loire.
