The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is a Latin Church metropolitan archdiocese in southeastern Texas, erected as the Diocese of Galveston in 1847 and elevated to an archdiocese in 2004. It is led by Archbishop Joe S. Vasquez, who succeeded Cardinal Daniel DiNardo in 2025.

History

Covering a portion of Southeast Texas, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston (Latin: Archidiœcesis Galvestoniensis-Houstoniensis) is an archdiocese of the Catholic Church in the United States and the metropolitan see of the ecclesiastical province covering east Texas. First erected as the "Diocese of Galveston" in 1847 and a diocese from 1959, it became an archdiocese in 2004. St. Mary Cathedral Basilica in Galveston is its mother church, with the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston serving as co-cathedral. Joe Vásquez is the archbishop.

  • Pope Leo XIV appoints Bishop Brendan Cahill as Bishop of Joliet

    Pope Leo XIV has appointed Brendan J. Cahill as the new bishop of Joliet, Illinois. Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment on September 17, 2026. Bishop Cahill, who has led the Diocese of Victoria in Texas since 2015, succeeds Ronald A. Hicks. Hicks previously served as the bishop of Joliet for five years before being appointed archbishop of New York in December 2025. Since that time, Auxiliary Bishop Dennis E. Spies has served as the apostolic administrator for the Joliet Diocese. Cahill currently serves a three-year term as chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in 1990 and received his episcopal consecration in 2015. Archbishop Hicks described Cahill as a man of deep faith and a pastor for those on the margins, noting that his fluency in Spanish will benefit the diocese. The Diocese of Joliet plans to schedule Cahill's installation Mass for November.
