Latin-rite metropolitan archdiocese seated in the Haitian capital, erected as a metropolitan see on 3 October 1861 under the Concordat of 1860. Its seat, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, was destroyed in the 12 January 2010 earthquake. Its suffragans are Jacmel, Jeremie, Anse-a-Veau et Miragoane, and Les Cayes.

History

A metropolitan archdiocese, the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince (Latin: Archidioecesis Portus Principis; French: Archidiocèse de Port-au-Prince; Haitian Creole: Achidyosèz Pòtoprens) oversees the suffragan dioceses of Jacmel, Jérémie, Anse-à-Veau and Miragoâne and Les Cayes. Approximately 668,700 Catholics live within it, and since its inception in 1861 the clergy have been primarily French.
