Latin-rite diocese in western Hungary, erected 17 June 1777 by Empress Maria Theresa's reorganization from territories of the Dioceses of Veszprem and Zagreb. Suffragan of the Archdiocese of Veszprem, with its seat at the Cathedral of the Visitation of Our Lady in Szombathely. Its patron is St. Martin of Tours, born in ancient Savaria (Szombathely).
