Latin-rite diocese in northeastern Bihar, India, erected 27 June 1998 from the Diocese of Dumka, covering the Purnea, Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj districts. Initially under Ranchi, it has been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Patna since 1999, with St. Peter's Cathedral in Purnia as its seat and about 24,400 Catholics (2004).
