History

Since 1881 the Archeparchy of Beirut and Byblos (Latin: Archieparchia Berytensis et Gibailensis Graecorum Melkitarum) has been a metropolitan eparchy of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic church in communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Situated in Lebanon and embracing the cities of Beirut and Byblos, it is by population the largest Melkite eparchy in the Middle East. Georges Wadih Bacouni, S.M.S.P., its current eparch, was elected in November 2018.
