History
An ancient see of northern Italy, the Diocese of Mantua (Latin: Dioecesis Mantuana) already existed at the beginning of the 8th century, although Laiulfus (827) is the earliest bishop attested by name. Since 1819 it has been a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Milan. The bishop's cathedra stands in the Cathedral of S. Pietro Apostolo, and the city also holds the Basilica di Sant'Andrea di Mantova.
