History

Pope Benedict XVI established the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalay on 22 May 2010 by bifurcating the Diocese of Hakha; it is suffragan to the Archdiocese of Mandalay. The diocese sits in the northwestern part of Myanmar (Burma), on the border with India, taking in some part of the Chin State and part of Sagaing Division, and is bounded by the diocese of Myitkyina on the Northeast, Mandalay on the East and Hakha on the South. Its 22 parishes are grouped into 4 vicariates or zones: Kalay, Khampat, Tiddim and Tonzang. The territory is mainly inhabited by the Zomi ethnic groups, also known as Chin.
