History

What is now the Diocese of Myitkyina (Lat: Dioecesis Myitkyinaensis), a Latin Catholic diocese in Burma, was erected in 1939 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Bhamo, formed from territory of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Burma. In 1961 the prefecture became a full diocese, suffragan to the Archdiocese of Mandalay. Francis Daw Tang, appointed in 2004, is the current bishop, and the diocese today manages numerous churches, schools and clinics throughout Kachin State.

    Bishop John Mung Ngawn La Sam visited more than 1,000 displaced people at the St. Teresa refugee camp in Myanmar’s Kachin State on Sunday, September 20. The Bishop of Myitkyina traveled to the camp with several priests, consecrated lay Catholics, and the head of Caritas to provide spiritual support to those affected by civil conflict. During the visit, the Bishop celebrated Sunday Mass and confirmed seven adult members of the community. Father Peter Lazum Naw Bawk, the local parish priest, said the visit reassured the displaced families that their pastors and God have not forgotten them. While celebrating the Eucharist, the Bishop encouraged the faithful to live a concrete faith through good works rather than being Catholics by birth alone. He told the community that God's blessings flow from living according to His will.
