History

Covering the province of Ilocos Sur on Luzon, the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia is an archdiocese of the Catholic Church in the Philippines with its see in the city of Vigan. It was erected in 1595 in the city of Nueva Segovia, the modern-day Lal-lo, Cagayan, which since 1910 has belonged to the current Archdiocese of Tuguegarao. In 1758, during the pontificate of Benedict XIV and at the request of Bishop Juan de la Fuente Yepes, the see was transferred to Vigan on account of its relative distance.
