History

Centered on the city of Wrocław in Poland, this Latin Church archdiocese (Polish: Archidiecezja wrocławska; German: Erzbistum Breslau; Czech: Arcidiecéze vratislavská; Latin: Archidioecesis Vratislaviensis) traces its founding as a bishopric to the year 1000. From then until 1821 it stood under the Archbishopric of Gniezno in Greater Poland, and from 1821 to 1930 it answered directly to the Apostolic See. Between 1821 and 1972 its official name was the (Arch)Diocese of Breslau.
