Latin Church

Latin-rite diocese in southwestern Slovenia with ancient roots in the Diocese of Capodistria (circa 530), united with Trieste from 1828 and re-established as the independent Diocese of Koper on 17 October 1977. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana, with its seat at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Koper. Bishop Peter Stumpf, S.D.B., transferred from Murska Sobota, succeeded Jurij Bizjak in November 2024.

History

Southwestern Slovenia is served by the Diocese of Koper (Latin: Dioecesis Iustinopolitana; Slovene: Škofija Koper; Italian: Diocesi di Capodistria), a Latin Church diocese within the ecclesiastical province of Ljubljana. Its cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, stands in the Adriatic port town of Koper, while the Co-Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Nova Gorica has held co-cathedral status since 2004. The diocese's Latin name, Dioecesis Iustinopolitana, recalls that Koper was once called Justinopolis in honour of the Byzantine emperor Justinian II.

  • Aparecida shrine celebrates Rupnik-designed western facade

    The National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in São Paulo, Brazil, celebrated the completion of its western facade on Sept. 12. The ceremony included music, prayers, biblical dramatizations, and fireworks to mark the installation of mosaics designed by Father Marko Rupnik. The Centro Aletti, an art studio founded by Father Rupnik, is credited with the installation that surrounds the basilica. Father Fabio Evaristo, the shrine administrator, told TV Aparecida that visitors will remember the people who helped complete the work and the community that came together to accomplish it. Father Rupnik faces decades of allegations involving sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuse. While the Jesuits dismissed him for refusing to obey restrictive measures imposed after the allegations were found credible, he was received into the Diocese of Koper in Slovenia less than two months later. His canonical trial remains under review by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. An online video recently raised questions regarding his participation in the installation of these mosaics.
