History

Among the Latin suburbicarian dioceses, those Catholic sees near Rome that hold a special status under a cardinal bishop, is Velletri-Segni. From 1060 until 1914 the see of Velletri was joined with that of Ostia. Saint Clement is the dedication of the cathedral in the city of Velletri. Segni, a former Roman colony, was a small town lying roughly midway between Rome and Montecassino; in the 12th century its diocese held only seven castelli, 37 churches, 3 chapels, and 3 cloisters.
