History

At Frascati, near Rome, sits the Diocese of Frascati (Lat.: Tusculana), a Latin suburbicarian see of the Diocese of Rome and a diocese of the Catholic Church in Italy. Its bishop is a Cardinal Bishop, and from the Latin name of the area he has also been called Bishop of Tusculum. After Tusculum was destroyed in 1191, the bishopric moved to nearby Frascati, a town first mentioned in the pontificate of Pope Leo IV. The Cardinal-Bishop served concurrently as diocesan bishop of the see until 1962, when Pope John XXIII relieved the Cardinal Bishops of any actual responsibility in their suburbicarian dioceses, leaving the title purely honorific.
