The Latin rite Diocese of Hai Phong in northern Vietnam traces to the Apostolic Vicariate of Eastern Tonkin erected on 24 July 1678, renamed Hai Phong in 1924, and was elevated to a diocese on 24 November 1960. A suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hanoi, its cathedral is the Cathedral of the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary in Hai Phong.

History

Catholic institutions first appeared in the territory of northern Vietnam's diocese of Hải Phòng (Latin: Dioecesis Haiphongensis) as early as 1655, brought by French and Spanish missionaries who remained active until the middle of the 20th century. The diocese in its present form was declared on 24 November 1960; it covers 10,000 km2 as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hanoi. Vincent Nguyên Văn Ban has been its bishop since 2022.
