    Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV met with Korean priests, men, and women religious living in Rome on Monday, October 5, to discuss the history of the Church in Korea and preparations for the 2027 World Youth Day in Seoul.

During the audience in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace, the Pope addressed the group of 170 religious figures, many of whom are helping organize the World Youth Day scheduled for August 3 to 8, 2027. He described the 2027 event as a meeting between memory and the future, encouraging young people to carry the faith of the martyrs into the world.

The Pope also marked the 25th anniversary of the inauguration of the Pontifical Korean College. He noted the unique history of the Korean Church, which grew from a spontaneous search for truth through Christian texts. He specifically referenced the example of Thomas Choe Yang-eop, the second priest in Korean history, whom he called the "martyr of sweat" for his intense evangelization work.

Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi told a congregation in Assisi that war is not an inevitable fate, calling for people to disarm their hands and hearts to achieve peace.

Presiding over a Mass on October 3 to mark the eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis, the president of the Italian Episcopal Conference addressed a crowd that included Italian President Sergio Mattarella, various ambassadors, and government officials. During his homily, Zuppi stated that the world is currently tempted by a deceptive culture of power driven by nationalism and significant economic interests. He emphasized that peace must begin with individuals and remains the only possible future.

The celebration at the Basilica of Saint Francis was held alongside Bishop Felice Accrocca and Cardinal Ángel Fernandez Artime. The event honored Saint Francis as a figure of reconciliation, a theme noted during Pope Leo XIV's pastoral visit to Assisi in August. During the liturgy, the mayor of Assisi, Valter Stoppini, offered oil and lit the votive lamp of the Italian municipalities.

    Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, expressed grief over the deaths of two Christian women killed during an Israeli military strike in Gaza. Maysa Khader Ibrahim Abu Dawoud and Mary Hafez Michel al-Najjar died in the early hours of October 3 when an attack hit a residential building in western Gaza City.

The two women had been living as refugees at the Catholic Church of the Holy Family before moving to a rented home. Their funeral was held at the Church of Saint Porfirio, attended by approximately 200 people, including Catholic priest Gabriel Romanelli.

The strike resulted in a total of 5 civilian deaths and left numerous people injured. While the Israeli military did not immediately release a statement regarding the specific attack, reports indicate the operation targeted Ali al-Amoudi, a figure identified by Israeli media as a Hamas leader. The whereabouts of al-Amoudi remain unknown.

Bishop David M. O’Connell, chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Catholic Education, called the proposed regulations for the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit a transformative opportunity for children. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS announced the proposed rules on Oct. 1 to implement the program, which was enacted in 2025 and is scheduled to launch Jan. 1.

The tax credit, also known as the Education Freedom Tax Credit, provides a nonrefundable federal credit for contributions made to scholarship-granting organizations. These funds benefit students in public, charter, or private schools, including religious institutions. For the program to be available to children in a specific state, that state must formally elect to opt in. Federal agencies stated that approximately 96% of children in participating states would be eligible for the funds.

Steven F. Cheeseman, president and CEO of the National Catholic Educational Association, noted that the announcement clarifies that married couples filing jointly can claim up to $3,400 for eligible contributions, doubling the previously understood $1,700 household limit. Individuals may claim up to $1,700 for qualifying contributions. The National Catholic Educational Association stated the regulations provide necessary clarity for donors, states, and scholarship-granting organizations.

A New Mexico court case has recognized an aborted fetus as a person, resulting in a $200,000 settlement for the child's estate. In the case of Wabbington v. Boyd, the settlement was reached following a wrongful death lawsuit involving an abortion performed during the third trimester of pregnancy.

The lawsuit, argued by Albuquerque medical malpractice attorney Mike Seibel, centered on an abortion performed in 2020 without the mother's valid informed consent. According to Seibel, the mother was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the procedure. The legal action also alleged that providers failed to inform the woman of available state support or refer her to the New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department.

The settlement provides compensation to the heirs of the unborn child, who was recognized as a legal person entitled to equal protection under the law. Attorneys and pro-life organizations described the case as a precedent-setting development, with Seibel noting it is the first time an abortion provider has been sued for the wrongful death of a baby.

Giuseppe Baturi, the Archbishop of Cagliari and Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference, presided over the first vespers for the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis on October 3. The service took place at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi as part of the solemn commemoration of the saint's passing.

During his homily, Baturi stated that modern culture often hides, removes, or treats death as a problem to be managed. He noted that the testimony of saints can help people face the mystery of death to better understand the meaning of life. Baturi highlighted how St. Francis welcomed death as a "sister" rather than avoiding it, a stance he linked to the saint's desire to identify with the crucified Lord.

Baturi emphasized that the Church's mission is to provide a presence by staying close to those who suffer without rushing to resolve their situation. He argued that no life lacks value, even as it fades, and called for the Church to focus on proximity, protection, and care.

The Diocese of Asunción published the Gospel reading for Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

The text, from San Lucas 10, 38-42, describes Jesus entering a village where a woman named Marta receives him in her home. Her sister, María, sits at the feet of the Lord to listen to his word. When Marta asks Jesus to tell María to help her with the housework, Jesus responds that María chose the best part.

A meditation accompanying the text states that María symbolizes listening to the word, which must be expressed through love and service to others. The commentary notes that Jesus showed openness by teaching women and children, who were not typically given instruction during that time.

The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America held a Transitus procession on Oct. 3 to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

A procession of friars, priests, nuns, and laypeople walked a mile and a half through the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The march began on the lawn of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and ended at the monastery.

Franciscan friars led the group carrying two emblems of the saint. The first was a Byzantine-style San Damiano cross, which tradition says featured a vision of Jesus Christ in 1206. The second was a wooden funeral bier carrying an empty brown Franciscan habit and a white cord cincture. The procession concluded with the placement of the habit in front of the monastery church altar.

Pope Leo XIV led a prayer vigil for 80,000 young Catholics at the Stade de France on Friday, September 25, 2026. During the program, the pope answered questions and led a meditation while attendees venerated the relics of the Holy Tunic and the Holy Cross.

In his meditation, the pope told young French people that their only weapon is given love and that true freedom comes from a living connection with Jesus. He encouraged them to live the gospel and follow the examples of the saints, noting that the fight they are called to is a battle of faith that avoids violence, contempt, or oppression.

The event included an artistic performance by hundreds of young people depicting French saints and the history of the Church in France, which featured live horses and fireworks. Attendees included families from Versailles, people from working-class suburbs, and groups carrying Breton and Vendéan flags.

    Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV said safety concerns regarding artificial intelligence should be taken seriously. The Pope's comments come as President Donald Trump pushes for the rapid development of AI and data centers.

In his first encyclical, Magnifica humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence, the Pope addresses the technology. This follows a September 29 agreement between Trump and tech executives to establish voluntary safety standards, which includes allowing independent auditors to assess AI technology. Trump also signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use the term "superintelligence" for AI.

The push for AI development occurs as polling shows public hesitation. An October 1 poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 31% of U.S. adults approve of how Trump is handling AI.
