Pope Leo XIV opened a new cycle of catecheses on the documents of the Second Vatican Council, dedicated to the pastoral constitution Gaudium et spes. He recalled the legacy of Saint John XXIII. and emphasized that the Church perceives as its own the joys, hopes, sorrows, and anxieties of people today, especially the poor and suffering. He called on believers not to become "indifferent spectators" of the events of their time.
