She noted that these topics represent real human experiences, such as families forced from their homes or victims of human trafficking. She explained that the Church advocates for these issues because of the call to ensure everyone enjoys life in its fullness and that the dignity of every person is respected.

Bishop Santo Loku Pio Doggale urged young Catholics in South Sudan to use their education and talents to serve others during a celebration of the Solemnity of St. Daniel Comboni on October 10. Speaking at Theresa Kator Cathedral in the Archdiocese of Juba, the auxiliary bishop challenged youth to contribute to the development of the country through faith and practical service.

Bishop Loku described St. Daniel Comboni as a missionary who defended African dignity by confronting poverty, slavery, and injustice. He noted that the celebration of Comboni has been elevated to a Solemnity in both Sudan and South Sudan. The bishop encouraged the faithful to follow the missionary's example by supporting the poor and marginalized while committing to justice.

Reflecting on the image of the Good Shepherd, Bishop Loku told Christians to protect vulnerable people and reject practices that undermine human dignity, such as child marriage and social divisions. He also advised students to take their studies seriously to prepare for positive contributions to the future of the nation.

Archbishop Jacques Assanvo Ahiwa told seminarians at Our Lady of Guessihio-Gagnoa Major Seminary to use their formation years to prepare for the priestly life. During a Mass marking the start of the 2026-2027 academic year, the Archbishop of Bouaké encouraged students to integrate the virtues and evangelical counsels necessary to become priests according to the heart of God.

Addressing students, lecturers, and professors, Ahiwa used the parable of the wedding feast from the Gospel of Matthew to explain that entering the Kingdom of God is a grace requiring an active response rather than a reward for merit. He described the seminarians' time in formation as a period to sew the spiritual garments suited to their future state of life, which includes offering their total selves to God.

Bishop Henry Juma Odonya presided over the funeral mass for Mama Pauline Jeptoo LeLei in the Diocese of Kitale. The deceased was the mother of Father Josephat Kipngetich Busieney, who serves at St. Paul’s Centre in Waitaluk within Sirende Parish.

Bishop Mark Kadima Wamukoya of the Catholic Diocese of Bungoma urged Kenyans to foster unity by practicing truthfulness, hard work, and gratitude to God. During a homily at Holy Trinity Webuye Parish on October 11, the bishop stated that these values strengthen communities and drive development.

During a Mass on October 10 to mark the start of the 2026/2027 academic year at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Major Seminary, Bishop António Lungieki Pedro Bengui told those responsible for formation that they must verify the intentions of applicants. Speaking at Holy Family Parish, the bishop said entering a seminary is a decision that requires responsibility, human maturity, and serious vocational discernment.

Bishop Bengui noted that preparing for the priesthood requires candidates to leave their family environments to live in communities with people of various personalities and experiences. He said formators must assess whether candidates possess the emotional and spiritual stability needed to handle the challenges of community life and the specific demands of their intended path.

Archbishop Filomeno do Nascimento Vieira Dias of the Archdiocese of Luanda urged Christians in Angola to practice solidarity by sharing material and spiritual resources and supporting the needy. Speaking on October 9 at the opening of his pastoral visit to St. John Calábria Parish, the Archbishop told priests, parishioners, and local community members that solidarity requires concrete actions and attention to the needs of others.

Archbishop Dias described providence as the ability to perceive what a neighbor requires. He encouraged the faithful to assist those living alone, noting that providing company and presence can offer comfort to people facing difficulties. Fr. Michael Ufok Uduekpo, a priest from Nigeria’s Catholic Diocese of Ikot Ekpene, has released a book titled “Care and Unity among Priests, Religious, and the Laity with Biblical Roots.” The 239-page work examines the biblical foundations and practical ways priests, consecrated men and women, and laypeople can build relationships through communion and collaboration.

In an interview with ACI Africa on October 8, Fr. Uduekpo said the ongoing Synod on Synodality initiated by Pope Francis encouraged him to write the book. He explained that the Church's mission is relational and cannot be completed by a single group alone.

Fr. Uduekpo described care and unity as requiring fraternity, humility, self-giving, and mutual support among all baptized members. He noted that priests, clergy, and religious sisters must demonstrate fraternal charity to support the common mission of the Church.

Fr. Jose Martinez, a priest from the Missionaries of Guadalupe currently serving in Mexico, is returning to Kenya for the Kenya-Mexico Deaf Intercultural Exchange held from October 4 to 18, 2026. The former chaplain to the deaf community in the Archdiocese of Nairobi joined the event to help strengthen the inclusion of deaf people within the Catholic Church.

Fr. Martinez, who works in deaf ministry in Mexico, told Radio Maria Kenya-Nairobi that using sign language is essential for making the Gospel accessible and for effective pastoral ministry. He is accompanied by two Mexican sign language experts, including Aldo, a Mexican deaf Catholic leader.

The two-week exchange is promoted by the Guadalupe Missionaries through the Intercontinental Missionary Linkage Center of the Missionaries of Guadalupe. This program builds on a previous intercultural exchange held in Mexico in 2024, where participants shared pastoral experiences and cultural traditions related to ministry among deaf people.

Archbishop Ntambue Kasembe of Kananga urged the new bishop of Kabinda to lead with humility and forgiveness during the episcopal ordination of Mons. Eustache Ntambwe Makoyo on Sunday, October 11.

During his homily, Archbishop Kasembe told Bishop Makoyo to avoid the prestige of the crosier and the mitre, suggesting instead that he model his leadership on Christ by serving the faithful. The Archbishop of Kananga encouraged the new bishop to become a living sacrifice and to love and forgive everyone.

Pope Leo XIV appointed Makoyo as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Kabinda on July 29. The see became vacant following the transfer of Archbishop Kasembe to the Archdiocese of Kananga on March 19, 2024.

In his first address as bishop, Makoyo said he recognizes his spiritual responsibility and has accepted the role of being an ambassador for Christ. He expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for the appointment and thanked the various religious leaders and authorities who attended the celebration.

Priest Lucas Kiiza urged Christians in the Kabale Diocese to work closely with Bishop Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire to tackle social challenges facing families and communities.

Kiiza, the parish priest of Nyamwegabira Parish in Kanungu District, made the appeal during a Thanksgiving Mass on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Bishop Inácio Lucas Mwita of the Diocese of Gurúè urged two newly ordained deacons to dedicate their ministry to the poor, the marginalized, and the vulnerable. During the diaconate ordination held October 10 at St. Anthony Cathedral, the bishop told the men that Church service should not be driven by a search for prestige or personal benefit.

Bishop Mwita told the deacons that being a priest or a deacon is not a career and that their roles should not be viewed as opportunities to gain prominent positions. He cautioned that while entrepreneurs, traders, and politicians may seek personal gain through their work, Church ministers must follow the example of Jesus Christ by prioritizing service to others. He stated that their mission requires humility, availability, and permanent dedication to the people of God.

Archbishop José Manuel Imbamba, president of the Bishops' Conference of Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, called on the Church to develop methods and guidelines to protect the dignity and stability of the family. Speaking to Radio Ecclesia on October 9, the Archbishop of Saurimo said that new ideologies and cultural trends are attacking and tarnishing the institution of the family.

Imbamba made these comments during a meeting convened by Pope Leo XIV with the presidents of episcopal conferences and heads of Eastern Churches. The gathering marks the 10th anniversary of the publication of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia.

The Archbishop noted that the meeting serves to revisit the teachings of that document to see how they apply to current social and cultural transformations. He suggested the Church must assess how its teachings can address the specific problems currently affecting families in society.

Archbishop Julien Kaboré, the Apostolic Nuncio in Ghana, told members of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, that religious orders should use artificial intelligence to support their mission and protect human dignity.

Speaking on October 8 during a biannual conference in the Diocese of Wa, Archbishop Kaboré noted that artificial intelligence is rapidly changing communication, education, healthcare, and administration. He said the technology presents both opportunities and challenges, raising questions about privacy, employment, truth, and the potential for manipulation.

The Archbishop encouraged religious institutes, especially those focused on education and formation, to teach young people how to use these technologies efficiently. He stated that religious orders must help the younger generation distinguish between technological efficiency and authentic human flourishing, as well as between mere information and true wisdom. He added that when used responsibly, artificial intelligence can support the Church's work in areas such as healthcare and education.

Catholic bishops from the Episcopal Conference of Togo will meet in the Diocese of Kara from October 11 to 16 for their 143rd Ordinary Session. The gathering focuses on issues affecting the Church and the nation, including an examination of challenges facing major seminaries during the 2026-2027 academic year.

During the week, the bishops will review the current socio-political situation in Togo and assess pastoral life across various dioceses. The session also includes various meetings and audiences. On October 15, the bishops will celebrate the centenary of the Pontifical Mission Societies, the network used by the Pope to support missionary work.

The Episcopal Conference of Togo asked the faithful to pray for the bishops to receive wisdom and discernment during their deliberations for the benefit of the Church and the country.

Fr. Carlos Ernesto Mandlate, the spiritual advisor for the vocational ministry of the Archdiocese of Maputo, says the Church must use digital tools to reach urban youth who struggle to attend parish activities due to the fast pace of city life.

In an interview with ACI Africa, Fr. Mandlate suggested that the Church needs new methods to support the discernment of adolescents and young people. He noted that the vocational ministry has begun using WhatsApp, social media, videos, audio recordings, and multimedia presentations to connect with them. These digital reflections allow young people to participate even when they cannot attend in person.

Fr. Mandlate clarified that these digital tools are intended to complement rather than replace in-person accompaniment within parishes and pastoral communities. He stated that the Church must be present in the virtual spaces where young people currently spend their time.

Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union, encouraged children in Malawi to pray the Rosary every day and support the global mission of the Church through prayer, sacrifice, and financial contributions.

Speaking on October 7 at Our Lady of Fatima Salima Parish within the Archdiocese of Lilongwe, Nguyen addressed children participating in the One Million Children Praying the Rosary for Peace and Unity initiative. He noted that the missionary childhood movement remains active in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe and the local parish.

The Secretary General, a member of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, advised the children to carry out their activities with joy and to follow the guidance of their parents, teachers, volunteers, and formators. He also thanked parents for their role in educating their children in the faith.

Nguyen invited the children to join adults during Missionary Month, a period that includes the centenary celebration of World Mission Sunday. He called for the community to pray and offer sacrifices together in unity.

Msgr. Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen, OFM Conv., is leading a missionary animation and formation session for lay faithful and pastoral workers in the Diocese of Dedza on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

The Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union in Rome is conducting the session to help participants understand the missionary identity of the Church and renew their commitment to evangelization. The training also seeks to strengthen the role of participants in promoting missionary solidarity and cooperation.

The session coincides with the centenary of World Mission Sunday, which spans from 1926 to 2026. The Diocese of Dedza noted that the formation provides an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility to proclaim the Gospel and support the mission of the Church both locally and universally.

Bishop Richard Kazadi has called on spiritual directors of major seminaries in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to center their guidance on prayer, listening to the Holy Spirit, and a personal relationship with God.

The Bishop of Kolwezi made the appeal on October 8 during a Mass that opened the 18th training session for major seminary formators in Kinshasa. As chair of the Episcopal Commission for seminaries and clergy of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), Kazadi spoke at the Caritas Congo Reception Centre under the theme of spiritual accompaniment in vocational discernment.

The training session, which runs until October 11, aims to help spiritual directors support seminarians facing human, social, and pastoral challenges. Reflecting on the Letter to the Galatians, Kazadi told the participants that Christian life depends on grace and faith rather than human effort or a pursuit of perfection. He encouraged directors to help seminarians live their vocations through faith and openness to God's actions.

Researchers with the Global Formation Project are investigating whether African seminaries and theological institutions adequately include African pastoral realities in the training of religious leaders.

Sr. Leonida Katunge, the project's administrative officer for Africa, said the study has identified strengths in current formation systems alongside gaps and tensions that need attention. While Katunge noted a strong commitment to Christian formation and serious efforts to prepare leaders on the continent, she said the research questions if existing models account for the specific cultural and concrete realities of African people.

The Global Formation Project is a Christian resource initiative that studies how people develop spiritual maturity, character, virtue, and Christlikeness across various traditions and cultures.

Clive Kairuz expressed concern to The Southern Cross regarding the increasing acceptance of blasphemy within modern entertainment.

Msgr. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire was ordained and installed as the fifth bishop of Kabale Diocese on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Pope Leo XIV appointed Gubazire to the position, an appointment originally announced on July 15, 2026.

Bishop Emeritus Callist Rubaramira served as the principal consecrator for the ceremony. He was joined by Archbishop Tomasz Grysa, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, and Archbishop Lambert Bainomugisha of Mbarara Archdiocese. During the rite, the Chancellor of Kabale Diocese, Fr. Placid Mugumya, read the Apostolic Mandate in Latin, English, and Rukiga-Runyankore.

The installation brought together thousands of people, including Catholic clergy, religious men and women, government officials, and members of other Christian denominations. Following the homily, Gubazire made solemn promises to proclaim the Gospel and safeguard the faith according to Church tradition.

Bishop Mark Kadima Wamukoya of Bungoma Diocese called on Christians to act as instruments of peace within their homes, communities, and the nation during the National Prayer Day on October 3. Speaking at the Subukia Shrine in Nakuru Diocese, the bishop stated that bringing peace is the primary duty of every believer and leader.

The event was organized by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops. Addressing the theme "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God," Bishop Kadima identified humility, contentment, and living out the Beatitudes as the three paths to achieving peace. He noted that lasting peace requires people to choose humility instead of pride, violence, and greed.

Bishop Kadima, who previously served as Chargé d’Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature in South Sudan, explained that humble people make effective counselors because they are approachable, trustworthy, and willing to listen to advice. He also warned against using force to win conflicts, citing the example of the Prince of Peace.

Archbishop Tomasz Grysa, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, has called on bishops, priests, and the faithful to support Bishop Callist Rubaramira Gubazire as he begins his ministry in the Kabale Diocese. Archbishop Grysa stated that the appointment of Bishop Gubazire by Pope Leo XIV reflects his years of selfless service to the Catholic Church.

Bishop Gubazire, a member of the Missionaries of Africa, previously served the Church in Mozambique, Malawi, France, Ireland, the Philippines, and Ghana. Archbishop Grysa described him as a spiritual leader and academic whose missionary experience will benefit the diocese. The Nuncio noted that Bishop Gubazire was born and raised in the Kigezi region and encouraged him to build upon the work of former leaders, including the late Bishop Robert Marie Gay and Bishop Callist Rubaramira. Archbishop Grysa also urged local priests to work closely with the new bishop to help him carry out his pastoral responsibilities.

Sr. MaryGoretty Owino, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Anna, received the national Sustainable Development Educator Award from the Teachers Service Commission in Kenya. The award was presented on Monday, October 5, during the national commemoration of the 60th World Teachers' Day.

Sr. Isabelle, as she is commonly known, is a biology and chemistry teacher who has taught for 14 years. Her career includes positions at Loreto Convent Msongari, St. Sylvester Madiany Girls Secondary School, and St. Mary’s School Lwak girls Senior School. She currently teaches at St. Augustine Nyamonye Senior School.

The Teachers Service Commission recognized her for contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development in education. According to Sr. Isabelle, the award acknowledges her work engaging students, teachers, Church groups, and local communities in practical environmental steps that extend beyond her standard teaching duties.

Fr. Miro Babic of the Order of Friars Minor told members of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Anna that shared pain has shaped Franciscan life for years. Speaking during a Eucharistic celebration at St. Mary's Pastoral Centre in Kenya's Nakuru diocese on Sunday, October 4, the friar addressed the FSSA-Nairobi region to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

Fr. Babic told the over 30 sisters attending the celebration that wounds within a religious community are evidence of life rather than failure. He noted that St. Francis experienced the difficulties of brotherhood and that true fraternity carries pain because members allow one another to come close.

The friar challenged common artistic depictions of St. Francis, such as those showing him surrounded by singing brothers or tame animals, stating that the reality of the brotherhood was not an idyll. He explained that the historical community faced hard realities, including brothers leaving the order.

Bishop Alex Lodiong Sakor Eyobo of the Diocese of Yei called for safeguarding to be integrated into priestly formation during a two-day training workshop. The event, organized by the National Safeguarding Office of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference, focused on the theme of speaking up for those unable to speak for themselves.

More than 30 Church personnel attended the training, including chancellors, religious superiors, and vicars general from dioceses throughout Sudan and South Sudan. Bishop Sakor Eyobo stated that protecting children and vulnerable adults is a central pastoral duty, noting that these individuals are at higher risk of abuse and exploitation.

The bishop urged Church leaders to move beyond administrative procedures and make safeguarding a part of everyday pastoral practice. He emphasized that Church institutions must provide safe environments where people are treated with dignity and warned against the misuse of authority.

Sister Jecinter Antoinette Okoth has called on Catholics to use social media and digital platforms to spread the Gospel ahead of the 100th World Mission Sunday on October 18, 2026.

Speaking in an interview with Capuchin TV, Sister Okoth, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Anna, said missionary work is not limited to those traveling to distant countries. She stated that every baptized person can act as a missionary by proclaiming Christ and transforming lives through digital spaces. Sister Okoth, who works in the communications office of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA), also encouraged the responsible use of artificial intelligence to share the faith.

Sister Okoth noted that websites, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp groups allow the Church to reach the elderly, the sick, and young people who spend significant time online. She suggested that Catholics use these tools to share Scripture, prayers, and Church teachings to help people stay connected to their faith.

Bishop Alex Lodiong Sakor Eyobo of Yei Diocese is urging citizens in South Sudan to reject electoral manipulation and vote based on candidate records rather than material incentives.
