The Catholic Archdiocese of Bukavu is mourning 27 children killed in a fire that broke out on September 10 in the Cimpunda neighborhood of Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. The fire destroyed two schools and hundreds of homes in the Kadutu municipality. Local reports indicate the victims, consisting of 19 girls and eight boys, died while traveling to school.

Students from Catholic schools affiliated with Our Lady of Mercy Parish held a memorial Mass on Thursday, September 17, to honor the children. Catholic bishops in Nigeria called for a new approach to politics based on moral principles, justice, and responsible governance at the conclusion of their second plenary assembly. The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops appointed Father Raphael Mkuzi as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi. The Sisters of Mercy have opened the Sisters of Mercy Hub (SOM Hub) in Mansa, a modern commercial facility designed to generate income for the congregation and provide local access to specialized services. Superior General Sr. Delphine Kalisha stated the hub aims to reduce the travel time and expenses families previously faced when seeking healthcare, eye care, and commercial services in major urban centers.

The facility will host commercial partners such as Vision Care, Mobile City, and Dynalab to provide healthcare and eye care services to Mansa residents. Fr. Elias Omondi Opongo has introduced a six-pillar framework to guide the future operations of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). The priest, who recently began his term as vice chancellor, told AMECEA Online on September 15 that the pillars are intended to serve as a shared foundation for the entire university community.

The first pillar, which focuses on collegiality and shared purpose, emphasizes consultation across all levels of the institution, from students and staff to deans and security personnel. Fr. Opongo described this goal as a union of minds and hearts where decisions align with the university's strategic plan.

To support this communication goal, the university will launch a weekly bulletin called Zikomo. Fr. Opongo explained that the name, which means thank you in Chichewa and Chinyanja, was chosen to foster a sense of gratitude and to strengthen the university's identity within the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA).

Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, secretary of the Vatican Dicastery for Evangelization, told Catholic laypeople in Malawi to use their professional skills, resources, and positions of influence to advance the Church's mission. Speaking on Friday, September 18, at the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops offices in Lilongwe, the Archbishop said evangelization belongs to the entire Church rather than just priests, bishops, and religious sisters or brothers.

Bishop Tesfaselassie Medhin of the Catholic Eparchy of Adigrat is calling for peace and responsible leadership in a message marking the Ethiopian New Year. According to an Agenzia Fides report, the bishop urged political leaders in Ethiopia to serve all citizens, particularly the vulnerable, by following the example of Christ as a servant leader.

Bishop Medhin stated that leaders have a moral duty to protect peaceful people, defend human dignity, and pursue reconciliation. Father Pier Luigi Maccalli, an Italian missionary priest, shared reflections on his two-year detention in Mali during an interview with Aid to the Church in Need. Maccalli, a member of the Society of African Missions, was kidnapped by armed men on September 17, 2018, while working in Bomoanga, Niger. He was transported across the border into Mali and remained in captivity until his release on October 8, 2020.

Maccalli told the interview that he used a rosary made of cloth to maintain a connection to his family and the communities he served through prayer. He described his experience as a shift from physical missionary work to a spiritual one, stating that he learned to serve with his heart rather than his feet.

Before his kidnapping, Maccalli served as a missionary in Ivory Coast and was later assigned to Bomoanga Parish within the Catholic Archdiocese of Niamey in Niger. The area is noted for its isolation and lack of infrastructure, including roads and communications. Suspected jihadist fighters believed to be linked to al-Qaeda were responsible for his abduction.

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio praised the progress of the Humekodabe-Humekodabera Foundation, a local effort to raise resources for the diocese. Speaking during the Salesians Youth Movement national congress at the St. Dominic Savio community in Kubwa, Abuja, Fr. Morba said youth can help shape the digital environment by creating content that counters harmful material online.

Fr. Morba told ACI Africa on September 16 that social media offers an opportunity for young people to assist with the Church's mission of evangelization and catechesis. He suggested that by producing creative content, youth can teach others and spread Church teachings to their peers.

The priest also advised young Nigerians to maintain their Christian values despite the country's ongoing insecurity and economic challenges.

Bishop Mark Kadima Wamukoya of the Catholic Diocese of Bungoma told students to develop discipline, patience, and good character as they prepare for national examinations. During a prayer day for Muanda Catholic Schools held on September 16 at Cardinal Maurice Otunga Muanda Parish, the bishop told students from seven schools that education must prepare them for life rather than just academic success.

Bishop Kadima said that succeeding in life requires being a loving person with good character. He advised students to use their time wisely and avoid distractions, noting that lost time cannot be recovered. He encouraged the students to focus on their studies and pass their exams instead of wasting time complaining or focusing on starting families while still in school.

Christian leaders in South Africa condemned gender-based violence and femicide on Tuesday, September 15, following the discovery of eight women's bodies in Gauteng. Members of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) expressed grief and outrage over the deaths, which occurred in Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein within a two-month period.

The SACC called for the government to quickly implement the national disaster declaration on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The group stated that this response must include funded and monitored actions to protect women and girls to help rebuild their confidence in national safety.

The council urged police to properly investigate and prosecute every case of violence and abuse against women and girls. They also requested that the courts and judiciary handle these cases with urgency and issue the maximum legal sentences to perpetrators.

The Catholic Diocese of Abengourou in Ivory Coast issued a notice on Wednesday, September 16, warning the public that fraudsters are impersonating Bishop Jean-Pierre Tanoh Tiémélé to solicit money.

The secretariat of the bishop's office stated that one or more individuals are using the bishop's name and identity to make fraudulent financial requests. The diocese clarified that Bishop Tiémélé does not authorize these activities and will never ask for money to meet personal needs or request money transfers and other financial transactions on his behalf.

Diocesan authorities urged Catholics and the general public to be cautious of messages, phone calls, social media accounts, or online profiles that use the bishop's identity to ask for funds. The secretariat advised people not to respond to or pay any such solicitations and to report these incidents immediately. The notice did not identify the individuals involved in the alleged fraud.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe in Malawi has launched the Tiyende Limodzi Endowment Fund to improve the Church's financial sustainability. Archbishop George Desmond Tambala unveiled the fund to support evangelization and social missions, including pastoral programs, education, health, and social development.

Archbishop Tambala first announced the establishment of the fund during his 2026 Easter exhortation in April. He noted that local and global economic conditions, along with climate-related challenges, have made traditional mission funding more difficult. The Archbishop stated that the fund is a long-term effort to build a self-reliant Church capable of serving society and proclaiming the Gospel for future generations.

The fund was officially launched on July 25. In a statement released Wednesday, September 16, Archbishop Tambala thanked those who helped launch the initiative, noting that it reflects the unity of the archdiocesan family.

Bishop Henry Juma Odonya presided over a Mass for the reception of over 400 women from the West Pokot pastoral area into the Catholic Women Association (CWA). During the event, the bishop encouraged the women to be examples within their families, remain steadfast in faith, and emulate Saint Monica and the Virgin Mary.

The bishop also launched a book titled “MTUMISHI WA NENO” authored by Fr. Dr. Anthony Situma. The book provides guidance for community leaders and those who proclaim the word.

The State University of Londrina (UEL) conferred an honorary doctorate on Archbishop Luiz Fernando Lisboa on September 15 during a ceremony at the Cyro Grossi Auditorium in Londrina, Paraná. The Bishop of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim received the Doctor Honoris Causa title in recognition of his missionary service in Mozambique, where he previously led the Diocese of Pemba in the conflict-affected Cabo Delgado province.

During his acceptance speech, Archbishop Lisboa dedicated the honor to the missionaries, pastoral workers, and Christian communities in Mozambique who continued to serve others despite poverty, war, and displacement. He stated that the title belongs to the many people who left their safety to serve others and to the local Christians who remained firm during difficult times.

Archbishop Lisboa also urged the university to increase its engagement with Africa by expanding academic cooperation and research programs with African universities. He specifically requested that UEL create more opportunities for young African students to pursue higher education in Brazil, noting that many talented youth in regions like Cabo Delgado lack equal access to such opportunities.

The remains were moved to the Bo Government Hospital Mortuary after the reception. The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference is calling on the Ghanaian government to audit the national senior high school placement system to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability. The I Thirst Street Kids Organization is celebrating 10 years of providing aid to street children, the sick, the elderly, and vulnerable communities across Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
