City of Nettuno dedicates street to Giovanni Battista Tomassi
The city of Nettuno dedicated a street to Giovanni Battista Tomassi, the founder of Unitalsi, on Sunday, October 18. Located in the Santa Barbara neighborhood, the street is the first in Italy named after Tomassi.
Bishop Vincenzo Viva of the Diocese of Albano blessed the street during the ceremony. Nettuno Mayor Nicola Burrini and Pietro Corti, president of the Albano subsection of Unitalsi, also attended.
Bishop Viva stated that the dedication honors Tomassi's legacy of organized volunteerism centered on the dignity of the sick and fragile. He noted that Tomassi created a model of assistance and inclusion decades before those terms became common. For over a century, Unitalsi has provided free services to the elderly, the disabled, and the sick through tens of thousands of volunteers and various sections across Italy.
