Ethiopian Orthodox Church condemns Oromia killings
The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church condemned the killing of more than 60 people during two attacks in the Oromia Regional State. In a statement issued Monday, October 26, the General Assembly of the Holy Synod called on the government to protect Orthodox Christians and bring those responsible to justice.
The Church leaders reported that the deaths occurred following attacks in the Arsi Zone. On October 20, 14 people were killed at Gora Silingo in Merti Woreda. On October 24, 46 people were killed at Tereta Chole Birbo in Sherka Woreda. The Synod also reported that 20 homes were burned down and more than 20 people sustained serious injuries requiring hospital treatment.
The Synod stated that these massacres, displacements, and property damages against Orthodox Christians in the Arsi Eparchy and other parts of the country have worsened over time. The Church leaders said the attacks are incompatible with human rights and religious teachings.
