    Angelus · October 25, 2026

Pope Leo XIV addressed the Angelus prayer on October 25, 2026, reflecting on the commandment to love God and neighbor. Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace to the faithful in St. Peter's Square, the Pope stated that love for God is a personal relationship rather than a mere recognition of God's existence or power. He noted that authentic love is not an obligation or an imposition, but a response to the love God provides first.

The Pope explained that the two greatest commandments are linked by a single source. He said that an intimate relationship with God allows people to view themselves and others through the perspective of Christ, which overcomes selfishness.

Following his reflection, the Pope appealed for an end to hostilities in Yemen and offered prayers for those affected by a terrorist attack against the St. George Orthodox Church in Jordan. He also expressed spiritual solidarity with religious leaders gathering in Assisi on October 27 to mark the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace.

Pope Leo XIV met with 1,000 participants of the Jesus Youth International Conference 2026 in the Paul VI Hall on Saturday, October 24. This meeting marked the first time the movement, including its leaders, delegates, priests, and consecrated men and women, met with the Pope.

The conference brought together members from various parts of the world to reflect on the movement's direction forty years after its founding in Kerala, India. The Pope noted that the group has spent the last three years in a synodal style of consultation to determine how to apply their reflections to their future journey.

During his address, the Pope encouraged the group to maintain its youthful freshness and enthusiasm for the faith to help others encounter the Lord. He recalled that the movement began as a spontaneous initiative by young people within the Charismatic Renewal following a personal encounter with Jesus.

Sister Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, described the missionary legacy of Philippine Duchesne and the Society of the Sacred Heart during an interview in Saint Louis. Osiek, a New Testament scholar and former archivist for the Society of the Sacred Heart United States-Canada Province, noted that Duchesne arrived in North America in 1818.

Osiek stated that Duchesne originally intended to serve in China or Canada before arriving in the Mississippi Valley. At the time, Duchesne viewed the region as part of French colonial civilization rather than the United States. Osiek explained that Duchesne was part of a broader movement of French missionaries who made up the majority of Catholic missionaries globally by the end of the nineteenth century.

The discussion also connected this missionary history to Pope Leo XIV, who moved from Chicago to Peru and Rome. Osiek, who taught Robert Francis Prevost at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, addressed the achievements and the difficult history of the Society, including its involvement with slavery.

The return of the community follows a period of displacement caused by civil war in Myanmar. In November 2023, military forces occupied the cathedral compound and the diocesan pastoral center, forcing Bishop Celso Ba Shwe, priests, religious sisters, and the faithful to leave. The military subsequently used the cathedral as a base. Father Phe Bya stated that pastoral life resumed as word spread through villages and among families scattered by the conflict.

Briefing and sources: Catholic Bishops: Homelessness is a continual blight on society North and South. Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference

The Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference stated that the rising number of people seeking emergency accommodation across Ireland is a failure of government and public policy. During their autumn general meeting in Maynooth, the Bishops' Commission for Social Issues and International Affairs released a report addressing the homelessness crisis in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

In the Republic of Ireland, 17,885 people accessed emergency accommodation in August 2026. This figure represents a 111% increase since the Housing for All plan began in 2021 and a 169% increase over the last ten years.

In Northern Ireland, more than 5,600 people are living in emergency accommodation, while over 90,000 people are applicants for social housing. The bishops attributed the accelerating problem to a low supply of social housing and high demand. They also noted that the absence of a budget in Northern Ireland has left authorities relying solely on emergency accommodation. The bishops stated that addressing the economic root causes of homelessness is necessary to serve human dignity and the common good.

Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob and Des Moines Bishop William Joensen expressed regret regarding a White House meeting held Thursday that resulted in a photo of the bishops praying with President Donald Trump.

Archbishop Grob stated that the White House publicized the meeting through photos and video without the consent of the participants. President Donald Trump signed H.R. 227 into law on October 20, allowing eligible clergy to rejoin the Social Security and Medicare systems. The legislation, which received support from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, creates a two-year window for religious leaders to resume paying taxes on ministerial earnings for the 2029 and 2030 tax years.

Under current U.S. tax law, ministers may seek exemptions from Social Security and Medicare taxes on income earned through ministry. Those who choose this exemption forgo the corresponding benefits. The House Ways and Means Committee reports that approximately 2,000 people previously opted out of these programs.

Rejoining the system does not automatically guarantee benefits. Priests, pastors, and other religious workers must still meet standard contribution requirements to qualify. This is the third time Congress has provided a temporary period for clergy to reverse their decision to opt out, the last being in 1999.

Father Edward McNamara, a professor of liturgy and sacramental theology at the Pontifical Regina Apostolorum University, addressed questions regarding the orientation of the celebrant during Mass.

Regarding the placement of the chair, McNamara noted that the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) 310 prefers the chair be positioned so the celebrant faces the people at the head of the sanctuary. The GIRM acknowledges that sanctuary design or the central location of the tabernacle behind the altar may require different positioning.

McNamara also addressed a perceived difference between the Order of Mass (OM) and the GIRM concerning the Introductory Rites. The OM states that the priest faces the people while saying the Sign of the Cross after the entrance chant. In contrast, GIRM 124 instructs the priest to face the people and extend his hands during the greeting.

Briefing and sources: Catechists urged to teach children to reject hatred and violence in Myanmar. LiCAS News

Cardinal Charles Bo urged Catholic catechists in the Archdiocese of Yangon to teach children to reject hatred, discrimination, and violence. He made the appeal during the conclusion of an annual recollection and renewal course for 79 catechists at St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church on Oct. 20.

The program, held from Oct. 13 to Oct. 20, provided time for prayer and spiritual reflection. Cardinal Bo noted that catechists face financial hardship, limited resources, and difficult travel while serving communities affected by insecurity and displacement in Myanmar.

The cardinal said catechists should help children, young people, and families encounter Christ through teaching and personal witness. He encouraged them to form children in kindness, patience, forgiveness, and practical love to help them recognize the dignity of every person. He also called on them to promote compassion and reconciliation.

Briefing and sources: A True Democracy Respects God-Given Rights. Catholic Exchange

Catholic Exchange author Angie Allen argues that a true democracy must respect rights granted by God, specifically the freedom to act according to conscience and religious conviction. Allen states that laws contradicting natural law do not provide true freedom but instead require submission to government will under the labels of personal autonomy and liberty.

Allen identifies abortion and euthanasia as examples of laws that violate natural law. The author contends that describing abortion as a fundamental right or a choice is a manipulation of language that obscures the destruction of human life. Allen asserts that the unborn child possesses the same fundamental rights as a person outside the womb and that the preborn are the ones whose rights are being taken away.

A dramatic production titled "Echoes of Faith: The Blessed Martyrs of Song Khon" commemorated the 37th anniversary of the beatification of the Blessed Seven Martyrs of Song Khon on October 23. The 75-minute performance took place at the Sacred Forest in Song Khon, a village on the Mekong River approximately 600 kilometers northeast of Bangkok.

The production reenacted events from 86 years ago involving the first native Thais beatified by the Catholic Church. More than 70 performers, including actors, a choir, and a musical ensemble, participated in the event. Actors from St. Joseph Thare School and a local state university led the performance, while students from Darasamutr School in Sri Racha and the Archdiocese of Tharae-Nongsaeng provided musical support.

The event coincided with the national Thai Laypeople’s Day and was broadcast live throughout Thailand. The production used the historical grounds of the Sacred Forest as its setting rather than a traditional stage.

Children’s liturgy ministers from three Sydney parishes met on 20 October for the first meeting of the Children’s Liturgy Ministers Network in the Eastern Deanery Southern Cluster. Volunteers from the parishes of Malabar-Matraville, Botany, and Maroubra Bay Beach gathered to discuss methods for teaching the Gospel to young children.

The meeting was one of three priorities identified through collaboration between the Sydney Centre for Evangelisation Parish Renewal Team and the parishes of the Eastern Deanery Southern Cluster. The cluster also identified a need to collaborate on a faith formation event to prepare for Eucharist28.

During the gathering, ministers discussed successful practices and challenges in their ministry. Mary-Rose Garcia, the catechist coordinator at St Mary and St Joseph in the Maroubra Bay Beach parish, said the meeting provided encouragement and a sense of shared purpose for those working in children's liturgy.

Briefing and sources: Following the Science. The Catholic Thing

Robert Royal writes in The Catholic Thing that many young people lose their faith because they believe science has disproved religion. He notes that this perception presents a major challenge for the Church.

Royal describes science as a value-free pursuit used to discover truths about matter, energy, and the space-time continuum. He suggests that while science is valuable within its specific domain, it should not be used to address matters outside of its scope. He mentions that both Phil Lawler and the late Blessed Fulton Sheen maintained interests in understanding quantum theory.

Christian tradition from the second century onward identifies a correspondence between Eve and Mary. According to Daniel Cerqueira Afonso, the title New Eve refers to an inverted relationship between the woman in Eden and the Virgin of Nazareth. While Eve listened to the serpent, Mary is viewed as the counterpart in this theological comparison.

Artes Christi will present Mozart’s Requiem at Sydney Town Hall on 8 November to honor Australian military nurses. The candlelit tribute, titled A Candlelit Tribute to Our Military Nurses, features an 80-member choir and orchestra. The event supports the Australian Remembrance Foundation and commemorates nurses killed in the Bangka Island massacre, as well as those serving in current military generations.

The commemoration honors 21 Australian Army nurses killed on 16 February 1942. After Japanese aircraft sank the SS Vyner Brooke on 14 February, survivors reached Radji Beach on Bangka Island. There, Japanese soldiers ordered 22 nurses into the sea and opened fire, killing 21. Vivian Bullwinkel was the sole survivor of the shooting. Bullwinkel later testified at a war crimes tribunal and worked to preserve the memory of her colleagues.

Organizers are requesting approval from the Department of Defence to allow 21 serving military nurses from the Navy, Army, and Air Force to lay wreaths. A representative from the family of Vivian Bullwinkel has also been invited to participate in the service.

Briefing and sources: Making a Difference: Respect life every day, in every way you can. Catholic Outlook

A contributor for Catholic Outlook argues that people should maintain a consistent concern for all life issues rather than ranking them. The author suggests that praying and working for all human life strengthens the moral position of the Church.

The report notes that the poor and vulnerable are often ignored by those with political and economic power. To address this, the author states that people must make the presence of these individuals known and raise their voices. The text references a speech by the late Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, noting his stance that neutrality assists oppressors and that human dignity should take precedence over national borders.

David McPherson reports that the rise of religiously unaffiliated individuals in the United States has plateaued in recent years. While approximately 25 to 30 percent of Americans now identify as nonreligious, this figure is a significant increase from the 1 to 2 percent recorded in 1948.

Sociologists of religion Stephen Bullivant, Joel Thiessen, and Sarah Wilkins-Laflamme refer to this group as the Nones because they select none when asked for a religious affiliation in formal surveys. McPherson observes that many people, including those who identify as nonreligious, continue to acknowledge spiritual yearnings.

Lumen Christi parishioners gathered at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Ford Parkway in St. Paul on Oct. 25 to encourage registered voters to participate in the Nov. 3 midterm elections. More than a dozen parishioners held nonpartisan signs and distributed voting information to pedestrians.

The Honk and Wave event was organized by the parish discipleship program, Faith in Action: Bringing Christ’s Light to Public Life. Parishioner Mike Harley stated that the program intends to form a community that applies Catholic social teaching to public life.

The parish also conducted a letter-writing event through the nonprofit Vote Forward. During this activity, volunteers wrote 1,000 personal notes of encouragement to regions with historically low voter turnout. John Benda, a parishioner, helped modify the Faith in Action program for the congregation.

Charism: A Living Expression of Catholic Education
    discussEducation12h ago
Briefing and sources: Charism: A Living Expression of Catholic Education. Catholic Outlook

Catholic Outlook reports that the concept of charism serves as a practical expression of how religious communities live the Gospel and serve the Church. A charism is a gift from the Holy Spirit given to individuals or communities to build up the Church and serve others.

Different religious traditions apply these gifts through specific educational and spiritual focuses. The Edmund Rice tradition uses its charism to educate and empower young people, especially those who are marginalized, through faith, justice, and service. The Jesuits follow the spirituality of St. Ignatius, emphasizing discernment, intellectual formation, and service. The Augustinian tradition focuses on the search for truth, community, and interiority.

For religious congregations, charism acts as a foundation for understanding vocations and responding to the needs of a changing world. It is described as a living gift that requires continual expression rather than just preservation from the past.

Cardinal Blase Cupich will present the Nostra Aetate Award to Michael J. Sacks on October 29 during a gala for Mundelein Seminary. The event, held at the IBEW Local 134 venue in Chicago, serves to raise funds for the education of future priests. Cardinal Cupich and Mundelein Seminary rector John Kartje are scheduled to be the primary speakers.

Sacks, the chairman and chief executive of the investment firm GCM Grosvenor, was named the recipient following a report by Crain’s Chicago Business on September 29. That report identified Sacks as a donor to initiatives intended to strengthen abortion access infrastructure in Illinois and offset federal funding cuts for reproductive health services. These efforts have supported organizations such as the Chicago Abortion Fund and Planned Parenthood of Illinois. The Prairie State Access Fund, which involves the Michael Reese Health Trust, announced in March that it began distributing its first million dollars in grants.
