Pope Leo XIV met with 170 Korean priests and religious sisters living in Rome on Monday, October 5, to discuss the upcoming World Youth Day in Seoul, scheduled for August 3 to 8, 2027. During the audience in the Clementine Hall, the Pope asked those preparing for the event to place the legacy of Korean martyrs at the center of the gathering.

The Pope described the 2027 event as a meeting between memory and the future, where the faith passed down by martyrs is received by new generations. He encouraged the religious community to listen to young people and help them see that following Christ brings full freedom rather than restriction. He also called for the Gospel of peace to be announced freely across the Korean peninsula.

In his remarks, the Pope highlighted the history of the Church in Korea, noting that the faith grew through the testimony of martyrs such as Venerable Thomas Choe Yang-eop. He urged the consecrated men and women to act as builders of peace and reconciliation. The meeting also coincided with the 25th anniversary of the inauguration of the Pontifical Korean College.
