Southern African Bishops urge Catholics to remain united with Pope Leo XIV after SSPX consecrations

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

The Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference is urging Catholics to stay in full communion with Pope Leo XIV and the bishops united with him. In a statement signed by conference president Cardinal Stephen Brislin, the bishops asked the faithful to refrain from participating in activities or celebrations promoted by the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX).

This appeal follows the July 1 consecration of four bishops by the SSPX in Écône, Switzerland, without a papal mandate. The bishops noted that the consecrators and those receiving the orders incurred excommunication under Church law. The conference expressed sadness regarding the actions, which occurred despite warnings from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith that proceeding without a mandate would be a schismatic act.
