Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV appointed Antônio Fontinele de Melo as the bishop of the Diocese of Rio Branco in Acre. The appointment, announced on Friday, September 18, transfers Fontinele from the Diocese of Humaitá in Amazonas.

Fontinele previously began managing the Diocese of Rio Branco as apostolic administrator on July 12 following the resignation of Joaquín Pertíñez. The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) sent a greeting to Fontinele, with Cardinal Jaime Spengler, president of the CNBB, expressing the organization's support for his new ministry.
