Pope Leo XIV, Ahead of World Youth Day in 2027, Praises Korean Courage

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV praised the resilience of the Korean Church during a Monday audience at the Vatican celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Korean Pontifical College in Rome. Addressing Korean clergy and religious, the pope noted that the faith of the Korean people has endured through persecution, war, poverty, and national partition.

The pope highlighted the life of Venerable Thomas Choe Yang-eop as a model for ministry. He described how Choe traveled long distances to reach remote villages to share the Gospel and urged modern clergy to imitate that zeal.

These remarks come as preparations continue for the 2027 World Youth Day in Seoul. Pope Leo XIV stated that the growth of the Church in Korea into a missionary land rests on the testimony of its martyrs and their ability to maintain hope despite suffering.
