Pope Leo XIV tastes French students’ ‘St. Thérèse cake’

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Pope Leo XIV tasted a specialty cake made by students from Sainte Thérèse de La Guerche on Sept. 26 in Paris. The Pope sampled the dessert before celebrating Mass at the Place de la Concorde.

The high school, located in the Brittany region of France, specializes in training students for careers in the restaurant and hospitality industries. Assistant principal Vanessa Piquet said the cake has been part of the school for twenty years and carries specific symbolism. The heart shape represents the love for God and others found in the message of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, while the rose petal decorations represent the graces the saint promised through her prayers.

Piquet noted that the students feel great pride that their creation reached the Pope. While the school originally planned a trip to Rome to celebrate the cake's anniversary, the Pope traveled to meet the group instead.
