New book marks centenary of first bishop of Setúbal

Catholic Intelligence1 min read

The D. Manuel Martins Foundation presented the book Faça-se Luz last Saturday at the Setúbal City Hall. The work examines the religious and social contributions of D. Manuel Martins, the first bishop of the Diocese of Setúbal, and begins commemorations for the centenary of his birth in 2027.

Cardinal Américo Aguiar, the bishop of Setúbal, attended the event alongside the president of the foundation, Father Casimiro Henriques, and the acting president of the Setúbal City Council, Maria do Carmo Tiago. Cardinal Aguiar noted the importance of strengthening the legacy and testimony of significant historical figures to prevent them from becoming distant references. He thanked Father Henriques and António Melo, who coordinated the publication.

D. Manuel Martins was born on January 20, 1927, in Leça do Balio, in the Diocese of Porto, and died on September 24, 2017. The 2027 centenary celebrations will include an exhibition.
