Catholic Dioceses in Nigeria Challenged to Establish Funding Schemes for Priests’ Retirement
Catholic dioceses in Nigeria should create funding schemes to support priests as they transition from active ministry to retirement, according to Fr. Hyacinth Ichoku. Speaking at a presentation on the priesthood in Nigeria on September 16, Fr. Ichoku noted that increasing numbers of priests are approaching retirement age due to growth in priestly vocations. Fr. Ichoku, who serves as the Vice Chancellor of Veritas University Abuja, suggested that dioceses either enroll priests in a national pension scheme or establish independent funds to ensure clergy can support themselves after their service ends. He cited the Diocese of Awka as an example, noting that every priest there is enrolled in the National Contributory Pension Scheme. The researcher also proposed that individual priests could contribute to these funds using their stipends. However, he noted that it may be easier for dioceses to engage directly with the national pension system to provide sustainable retirement provisions for their pastoral agents.
