History

Headquartered in Brooklyn, the Diocese of Brooklyn (Latin: Diœcesis Bruklyniensis) is a Catholic diocese in the state of New York whose territory takes in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. It stands as a suffragan in the province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of New York. The Cathedral Basilica of St. James in Downtown Brooklyn serves as the diocesan cathedral, with the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph in Prospect Heights as co-cathedral. Among United States dioceses it is one of the few made up of 100% urban territory. Robert J. Brennan is the bishop.

  • Auxiliary Bishop René Valero, Trailblazer in the Diocese of Brooklyn

    Bishop Emeritus Nicholas DiMarzio remembered René Valero as a trailblazer who served as the first Hispanic auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Valero, who died in 2019, focused his ministry on immigrant communities and older adults. According to DiMarzio, Valero held significant responsibility for Hispanic ministry and served as a symbolic figure for the large Hispanic population within the diocese. Valero worked alongside DiMarzio for approximately two years, from 2003 until his retirement in 2005. Born in 1930 to Venezuelan immigrants, Valero studied at Cathedral College in Brooklyn and Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington before his ordination in 1956. He served at St. Michael-St. Edward Parish in Fort Greene and St. Agatha Church in Sunset Park. After earning a master's degree in social work from Fordham University in 1962, he worked for the Family Service Office of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, eventually becoming its director.

  • Parishes welcome nine new catechetical leaders for 2026-2027 year

    Nine men and women are beginning new leadership roles in parishes across the Diocese of Trenton for the 2026-2027 catechetical year. These assignments follow the official start of the year on Sept. 15. In Little Egg Harbor, Lauren Cittadino becomes the parish catechetical leader at St. Theresa Parish after assisting with first-grade classes last year. Tracy Craig, who previously served as a catechist for 16 years at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Marlton, is the new parish catechetical leader there, succeeding Jessica Donohue. Deacon Anthony Cullen is the new parish catechetical leader and director of faith formation at St. Benedict Parish in Holmdel. He previously worked in religious education and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Guadalupe Marin will serve as the parish catechetical leader at Mother of Mercy Parish in Asbury Park, drawing on her experience teaching Spanish-speaking students in Toms River and second-grade students in Lakewood.
