History

In the Canadian civil province of Alberta, the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Edmonton (Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Edmontonensis) serves as a Latin Church archdiocese whose metropolitan archbishop is seated at St. Joseph Cathedral, a minor basilica in Edmonton. As the metropolitan see of its ecclesiastical province, it presides over two suffragan dioceses in Alberta: Calgary and Saint Paul.

• Saskatoon Conference Marks Major Step in the Development of Catechesis in Canada

  More than 50 catechists from across Canada met in Saskatoon from Sept. 4 to 6 for the first Canadian Catechist Conference. During the event, Bishop Michael Smolinski of the Eparchy of Saskatoon announced the establishment of the first Ukrainian Catholic Catechetical School in Canada, which will be based at the Cathedral of St. George. The gathering grew from the National Catechists Group, an initiative of the Patriarchal Commission in Canada. For the past year, this group has held monthly online sessions to help catechists exchange ideas and build relationships. Attendees included Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski of New Westminster, who serves as Head of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission, and Bishop David Motiuk of Edmonton. Nazar Duda, the Director of the Catechetical-Pedagogical Institute of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv and Deputy Head of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission, also participated.

During his homily, Cardinal Tagle highlighted the piety and missionary zeal of the American evangelizer. He noted that Sheen represented values such as humility, solidarity with the poor and sick, and a living connection to Christ. Sheen was a 20th-century theologian, teacher, preacher, and pioneer in Catholic communications.

• Ricardo Rodriguez finds St. Matthew statue in Mexico City for Rocky Mountain House parish

  Ricardo Rodriguez located a fiberglass statue of St. Matthew in Mexico City to celebrate the 100th anniversary of St. Matthew Parish in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Rodriguez, a visually impaired parishioner, began searching for the statue in December 2025 after being contacted by parishioner Karen Carmichael. While visiting family near Mexico City, Rodriguez visited several stores to present options to Carmichael. After pausing the search during the Christmas and Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe season, Rodriguez traveled by bus to the Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine in mid-January. On Jan. 14, Rodriguez found a store that could make the statue out of fiberglass. Rodriguez obtained a quote for approval by the pastor, Father Raj. Carmichael coordinated the deposit with the store and sent the money to Rodriguez to complete the transaction.

• St. Rose of Lima at 100 years – the Onoway church has quietly stood the test of time

  Archbishop Stephen Hero celebrated a centennial Mass for St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Onoway on August 30. The Mass marked 100 years of the parish and included a Eucharistic Procession around the church led by the Archbishop. The celebration included several Church leaders, such as Bishop Emeritus Paul Terrio, who served as pastor at the parish from 1999 to 2000, and Rev. Andrew Rybak, who was the parish pastor from 2006 to 2023. Rev. Thomas Puthupparampil and Deacon Wes Turton also attended the event. Onoway Mayor Bridgette Coninx presented the church with a commemorative plaque during the Mass and reception. Minister Adriana LaGrange attended on behalf of Premier Danielle Smith to congratulate the parish. Other presentations and notes of congratulations were provided by the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Women’s League, and MP Michael Cooper.

• St. Agnes parish celebrates new renovations

  St. Agnes parish in Mayerthorpe celebrated the completion and blessing of its new hall, rectory, office, and coffee room on Sept. 13. Archbishop Stephen Hero and pastor Fr. Curtis Berube joined the community for Mass to mark the opening of the renovated spaces. The construction project began in August 2025 and was funded by a bequest from the estate of longtime parishioner John Blasko, received in August 2018. The parish completed the renovations without debt. During the construction period, the community held Masses and meetings at the Peter Trynchy Centre, provided by Pleasant View Lodge.
