History

About 475,000 Catholics across the South Jersey counties of Atlantic, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem belong to the Diocese of Camden (Latin: Dioecesis Camdensis) in the American state of New Jersey. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Camden serves as its mother church, and as of 2026 Joseph A. Williams is its bishop.

  • At age 20, new DRE ready to inspire in Carneys Point

    Glendy Ramirez has been named the new director of religious education for Saint Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Carneys Point. Ramirez has been a member of the Saint Gabriel community since the 2010 merger between the parish and Saint James in Penns Grove. Her previous experience includes serving as a Eucharistic minister, participating in the parish choir, and assisting with religious education classes since she was 14 years old. She also completed the Diocese of Camden’s School of Discipleship. Ramirez attended Guardian Angels Regional School in Gibbstown and Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill. She is currently studying diagnostic medical sonography in college. She stated that her goal is to encourage teenagers and young adults to participate more actively in their parishes.

  • Pope Leo XIV announces theme for National Migration Week

    Pope Leo XIV announced the theme for National Migration Week as “Even just one of these children,” a reference to Matthew 18:5. The Vatican stated the Pope chose this theme to express the Church's concern for minors involved in migration and to recall the duty to welcome them. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops scheduled the week for Sept. 21–27, concluding with the World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sept. 27. In the Diocese of Camden, the Christ Our Light Catholic Community in Cherry Hill will host a prayer evening for migrants and refugees on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. featuring speakers Julie Moreno and Sister Bonnie McMenamin, SSJ. Saint Thomas More Church in Cherry Hill will hold an evening of prayer, reflection, and personal testimony on Sept. 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bishop Joseph Williams will attend the gathering.

  • Parishes embrace Family Evangelizing Catechesis

    Parishes in the Diocese of Camden are adopting Family Evangelizing Catechesis to involve parents more directly in their children's religious education. This approach, also called family faith formation, moves away from traditional models where children attend separate classes while parents remain uninvolved. Father John Picinic, pastor of Christ Our Light Parish in Cherry Hill, said his parish is transitioning more fully to this model in the coming year. He noted that while traditional classroom settings help children build peer relationships, they offer limited opportunities to build a wider community with parents and the parish. Picinic stated that this new method allows parents to reclaim their role as the primary teachers of faith for their children. Bishop Joseph A. Williams established a new diocesan role for Laurie Power, who serves as the coordinator for Family Evangelizing Catechesis. Power supports pastors and parish catechetical leaders who want to implement these family based models.

  • Celebrating Hispanic Heritage in Diocese

    The Diocese of Camden will host several events to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15. Bishop Joseph A. Williams will celebrate Mass during a Hispanic Diocesan Celebration on October 4 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Divine Mercy Parish in Vineland. The event, themed Living According to the Holy Gospel, will feature a procession of banners from various diocesan Hispanic ministries. Traditional Hispanic food will be served in the parish hall following the Mass. The Hispanic Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference is scheduled for November 21 at Saint Luke Church, part of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine in Stratford. The conference, themed Called to Holiness, will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and includes a presentation by guest speaker Father Jorge Pulido from Colombia.
