History

Though the region around St. Gallen served as a significant center of Christianity in medieval Europe, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Gallen (Latin: Dioecesis Sangallensis, German: Bistum Sankt Gallen) was erected only in 1847. This Latin Catholic diocese in Switzerland matches the Canton of St. Gallen in extent, and its bishop also serves the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden as apostolic administrations. The episcopal see is St. Gallen Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
