History

Founded as the Diocese of Seville in the 3rd century and raised to an archdiocese in the 4th, the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seville (Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Hispalensis) is a Latin Church archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Seville, Spain. José Ángel Saiz Meneses currently serves as archbishop. Its suffragan dioceses are Cádiz y Ceuta, Córdoba, Huelva, Canaries, Jerez de la Frontera, and San Cristóbal de La Laguna o Tenerife.

    Archbishop José Ángel Saiz Meneses ordained one priest and four deacons on Saturday, September 26, at the Seville Cathedral. The newly ordained priest is Pedro Lu. The four new deacons are Carlos Javier Corento, 34, from Mairena del Aljarafe; Elder João Tavares, 26, from Cabo Verde; Javier Garrido, 26, from Dos Hermanas; and Fabio Martarelli, 50, from Osimo, Italy. Corento, Tavares, and Garrido attended from the Metropolitan Seminary, while Martarelli attended from the Redemptoris Mater Seminary. During the homily, Archbishop Saiz Meneses stated that the ministry received is a grace, an election, and a mission rather than the completion of a personal project. He noted that the Holy Spirit acts through the imposition of hands and the prayer of ordination to mark the lives of the men sacramentally. The Mass was concelebrated by Bishop Ildo Augusto dos Santos Lopes of Mindelo, auxiliary bishop Teodoro León, Francisco J. Ortiz, seminary rector Andrés Ybarra, and Redemptoris Mater Seminary rector Antonio Escribano.

    Archbishop José Ángel Saiz Meneses presided over a solemn Mass for María Santísima de Regla at the Church of the Misericordia in Seville on Sunday, September 27. The liturgy marked the 14th anniversary of the image's canonical coronation and concluded the 425th anniversary celebrations of the Los Panaderos brotherhood. During his homily, Archbishop Saiz Meneses told the brotherhood members to remain faithful to Jesus Christ, the Church, and the poor. He stated that a brotherhood must exist to glorify God, sanctify its members, announce Jesus Christ, and serve others rather than seeking personal prestige or engaging in rivalries. He also encouraged the group to serve the people of Seville. The Church of the Misericordia is located near the San Juan de Dios dining hall and the Pumarejo dining hall, both of which the brotherhood regularly supports.
