Archdiocese of Toledo

History

Toledo holds the primatial see of Spain. Tradition attributes the founding of this Latin Church archdiocese (Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Toletana) to James the Great in the 1st century, and it was raised to an archdiocese in 313, following the Edict of Milan. The Metropolitan Archbishop carries the title Primate of Spain, and since 1937 that of General Vicar of the Armies, although pastoral care of the Spanish armed forces has been entrusted since 1986 to the Military Archbishopric of Spain.

• Archdiocese of Toledo begins 2nd year of XXVI Diocesan Synod

  The Archdiocese of Toledo began the second year of its XXVI Diocesan Synod on September 26 during a pastoral year opening day. Approximately 500 participants gathered at the San Julián parish and the auditorio del colegio diocesano “Ntra. Sra. de los Infantes” in Toledo to mark the start of the new pastoral year and the next stage of the synodal process. Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves led a period of community prayer and Eucharistic adoration at San Julián parish. During a meditation, the archbishop spoke on the pastoral year theme, “Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna,” and encouraged attendees to place Jesus Christ at the center of pastoral work for parishes and diocesan communities. Enrique del Álamo, the episcopal vicar for laity, family, and life and delegate for the Diocesan Synod, presented the working materials for this second year of the synodal journey. A delegation of priests and laity also presented a report on the first year of the process and reviewed conclusions from the first general assembly.

• Diocese of Toledo launches "Quédate con nosotros" Eucharistic adoration project

  The Diocese of Toledo has launched a Eucharistic adoration project titled "Quédate con nosotros" for the 2026/2027 pastoral year. The program invites lay movements and associations to lead adoration sessions on the second Thursday of every month in Toledo and Talavera de la Reina. Inmaculada López, the diocesan delegate for Lay Apostolate, stated that the project intends to place Jesus in the Eucharist at the center of pastoral actions to improve evangelization. Each meeting will be prepared by a different lay association following its own charism to promote communion and synodality. The project also seeks to unite participants in prayer for the diocese, its projects, and vocations. In Toledo, the gatherings will take place at the parish church of san Julián, beginning with adoration at 18h and ending with Mass at 20h. In Talavera de la Reina, the sessions will be held at the parish temple of san Ildefonso, starting with adoration at 19h and concluding with the celebration of the Eucharist at 20h.

• Parroquia toledana de Valparaíso to organize jubilar journey

  Valparaíso parish in Toledo will host a jubilee day on October 3 to mark the 50th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Beatriz de Silva. The event, titled "Toledo walks with Saint Beatriz," includes a pilgrimage starting at 10:00 a.m. from the parish and ending at the Monastery of the Immaculate Conception. The pilgrimage will pass through several city points, including the Buen Pastor parish, the Carmelites school, and Santiago el Mayor parish. At 12:00 p.m., a Mass will be held at the monastery with the religious sisters. The parish invites children, youth, adults, and families from all Toledo parishes to participate. Additional activities include a jubilee retreat for teenagers aged 14 to 18 on October 2 and 3. On the afternoon of October 3, the parish will host a festival for families starting at 5:00 p.m.

• Parroquia de San Ildefonso celebrates 50 years

  St. Ildefonsus Parish is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a 10 day jubilee period authorized by the Holy See. The celebration began on September 20 with a Mass presided over by auxiliary bishop and secretary general of the Spanish Episcopal Conference Francisco-César García Magán. During this jubilee period, the parish serves as a jubilee temple for the Archdiocese, where people may receive a plenary indulgence. The parish was canonically established on September 30, 1976, by Cardinal Marcelo González Martín, the then archbishop of Toledo. According to the current pastor, Rubén Zamora, the community originally held liturgical services in the chapel of the Padre Juan de Mariana secondary school with Antonio Díaz-Corralejo serving as the first pastor. The anniversary schedule includes 24 hour Eucharistic adoration through September 30, including a special moment at 21h. The parish is also hosting an artisan market in the parish halls on September 19, 20, 26, and 27.
