The cathedral

Primatial Cathedral of St Mary, Toledo stands in Toledo, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.

History

Toledo holds the primatial see of Spain. Tradition attributes the founding of this Latin Church archdiocese (Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Toletana) to James the Great in the 1st century, and it was raised to an archdiocese in 313, following the Edict of Milan. The Metropolitan Archbishop carries the title Primate of Spain, and since 1937 that of General Vicar of the Armies, although pastoral care of the Spanish armed forces has been entrusted since 1986 to the Military Archbishopric of Spain.
