History

North-central and northeastern Indiana in the United States make up the territory of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend (Latin: Dioecesis Wayne Castrensis-South Bendensis). The see keeps two cathedrals: the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne is the primary, and Saint Matthew's Cathedral in South Bend the associate. The bishop is Kevin C. Rhoades.

• Bishop Louis Tylka announces first parish named for Blessed Fulton Sheen

  Bishop Louis Tylka of the Diocese of Peoria announced that the first parish in the world named for Blessed Fulton J. Sheen will be established in central Illinois. The new parish will be formed by merging St. Mary Catholic Church in El Paso with St. John Parish in nearby Benson. The newly created Blessed Fulton J. Sheen Parish is scheduled to officially take its name on December 9, which is the feast day of the new blessed. While the parish will carry the new name, the individual church buildings will retain their original names. Bishop Tylka made the announcement on September 26 following a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Mary in El Paso, the site where Sheen was baptized in 1895. Bishop John Barres of the Diocese of Rockville Centre celebrated the Mass. The announcement follows the beatification of Sheen, who was declared blessed on September 24 in St. Louis.

  Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle declared Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen blessed during a beatification Mass on Sept. 24 at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis. Tagle, acting as a papal delegate and pro-prefect for the Holy See’s Dicastery for Evangelization, pronounced the Church's declaration regarding Sheen's holiness and witness to Jesus Christ. Organizers estimated that 50,000 pilgrims attended the Mass. The Diocese of Peoria selected the large arena to accommodate the crowds. During a press conference held before the Mass, Bishop Louis Tylka of Peoria stated that pilgrims represented nearly every U.S. state and several other nations, including Brazil, Italy, and Poland. The Mass included approximately 90 bishops, 1,000 priests, 250 deacons, and 1,600 religious men and women. Clergy wore vestments embroidered with JMJ, the signature dedication to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph used by Archbishop Sheen.

• Bishop Daniel J. Felton opens canonization cause for Joseph Francis Buh

  Bishop Daniel J. Felton of Duluth officially opened the canonization cause for Msgr. Joseph Francis Buh during a Mass on Sept. 22 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. The opening of the inquiry grants Buh the title "servant of God." Buh was a Slovenian immigrant priest who arrived in Minnesota in 1864. He ministered to immigrants and indigenous communities, including the Ojibwe, and established as many as 57 parishes in northern and central Minnesota before his death in 1922 at age 88. His ministry was inspired by his fellow countryman, Venerable Frederic Baraga, the first bishop of Marquette, Michigan. The local investigation follows a June consultation with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which voted to support the inquiry. If the process leads to his canonization, Buh would be the first saint from Minnesota. The Mass was attended by representatives from the Slovenian government, the Catholic Church in Slovenia, local indigenous communities, and the Slovenian American community.
