Its cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Cyr and Saint Julitte in Nevers; the diocese is home to the shrine of St. Bernadette at the Espace Bernadette.

History

Covering the department of Nièvre in the Region of Bourgogne, the Diocese of Nevers (Latin: Dioecesis Nivernensis; French: Diocèse de Nevers) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in France. The Concordat of 1801 suppressed the see and joined it to the See of Autun, but in 1823 it was re-established as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Sens, receiving at that time a portion of the former Diocese of Autun along with part of the ancient Diocese of Auxerre.

    Pope Leo XIV completed a four day apostolic journey to France from September 25 to September 28, 2026. During the visit, the pope delivered various speeches, homilies, and messages to faithful attending in person or watching remotely. The itinerary included visits to the Élysée, UNESCO, Notre Dame, and the Bakhita house. The pope also met with members of the synodal assembly, celebrated a mass at Place de la Concorde, and prayed at the Lourdes grotto. On September 27, the pope met with bishops and celebrated mass at the Lourdes sanctuary. His final day included an interreligious meeting, a meeting titled "Aux racines de l’Europe pour la paix et l’unité," and a mass at cathédrale saint-Étienne, Metz. The Diocese of Nevers and the Associazione Clericale della Comunità dell'Emanuele have made the texts of his addresses available.
