World Suicide Prevention Month in the Diocese of Plymouth
The Diocese of Plymouth safeguarding team released a message for World Suicide Prevention Month to encourage open conversations about mental health. The diocese aims to remind those struggling with loneliness, depression, anxiety, grief, or hopelessness that support is available and that no one should face these challenges alone. The safeguarding team suggests that reaching out for help is a sign of courage. They recommend that individuals speak to trusted friends, family members, colleagues, parish community members, the safeguarding team, doctors, or mental health professionals as a first step toward finding hope. The diocese also notes that community members can help by listening to others with compassion and without judgment. Through family, friendships, neighborhoods, and parish life, meaningful connections can help reduce isolation and remind people that they are valued.

Tiverton church reopens nearly double its original size
St John and St James Church in Tiverton reopens this month following a rebuild that nearly doubles the size of the original building. The expansion fulfills a decades-long promise to provide a new Catholic church for the Tiverton community. Parish priest Canon Paver attributed the need for more space to the growth of the parish, which has seen an increase in residents from Central and Eastern Europe, India, and Africa. He noted that many parishioners work in local hospitals, the care sector, and food processing. Canon Paver also observed that more families are purchasing homes in the area and that there has been a noticeable increase in parishioners in their twenties.

Bishop Nicholas Hudson shares lessons from parents' 52-year marriage at Mass for Marriage
Bishop Nicholas Hudson shared reflections on his parents' 52-year marriage during a homily at the annual Mass for Marriage held September 12, 2026, at Plymouth Cathedral. Addressing couples celebrating anniversaries, the bishop described marriage as a vocation to forgive and to bear with the weaknesses of a spouse. Hudson recalled his mother's frequent remark that marriage is not easy, despite her describing her relationship with his father as great. He shared stories of his parents' devotion, such as his father staying by his mother's bedside throughout her entire Golden Wedding anniversary while she was in the hospital. He also noted how the couple handled small disagreements with laughter.
