Bishop Inácio Lucas Mwita of the Diocese of Gurúè urged university graduates to use their knowledge and skills to help others during a thanksgiving Mass on Thursday, September 24. The Mass was held for hundreds of students graduating from the Catholic University of Mozambique. During his homily, Bishop Mwita said that both natural abilities and skills acquired through study and experience are gifts from God intended for the common good rather than personal gain. He encouraged graduates to apply their education within their families, workplaces, and communities to support human development. Reflecting on the parable of the talents, the bishop said that the greatest failure is not lacking talent, but failing to make a talent productive. He warned that using personal abilities selfishly can cause division, whereas using them to benefit others can strengthen communities.

Catholic Bishop in Mozambique Calls for Shared Responsibility to Protect Life Amid Surge in Deadly Road Accidents
Bishop Inácio Lucas Mwita of the Diocese of Gurúè is calling on motorists, passengers, traffic authorities, and Christians to work together to prevent road accidents and respect safety regulations. During a homily at St. Anthony’s Cathedral, the bishop urged citizens to move from mourning tragedies to strengthening accident prevention to protect human life. Bishop Mwita spoke following a September 17 accident in the Zavala District of Inhambane Province, where a passenger vehicle collided with a Mozambique Defence Armed Forces truck. The collision killed 24 people and injured two others. The bishop's remarks follow national data showing 169 traffic accidents during the first half of 2026, which resulted in 239 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries. He attributed the frequent accidents to factors such as motorist indiscipline and issues within public transportation.
