• ACI Africa Editor Grateful to Reunite with Spiritans Over 20 Years after Painful Separation

  Fr. Don Bosco Onyalla, the Editor-in-Chief of ACI Africa, will make his perpetual profession as a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans) on Sunday, September 27. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at St. Austin’s Msongari Parish in the Archdiocese of Nairobi. Fr. Onyalla began his formation with the Spiritans in 1993 but was dismissed from the congregation in 2002 while preparing for his perpetual profession. Following his dismissal, Bishop Caesar Mazzolari, then Bishop of the Diocese of Rumbek in South Sudan, supported him through a period of discernment. This led to Fr. Onyalla being ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rumbek in March 2005. The Kenyan priest, who holds a doctorate in media studies from Daystar University, said he approaches this return to the missionary family with gratitude and peace after more than two decades away from the congregation.

• Association of Consecrated Women in Eastern and Central Africa convokes 20th Plenary Assembly for 2027

  The Association of Consecrated Women in Eastern and Central Africa (ACWECA) will hold its 20th Plenary Assembly from September 1 to 10, 2027, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. ACWECA President Sr. Grace Kyomugisha announced the event on September 23 in Nairobi, Kenya, following a period of discernment by the association's board and the secretaries general of member national associations. The assembly theme is "Formation: Strengthening the Identity of Consecrated Life for Mission in the ACWECA Region and Beyond." Sr. Kyomugisha, the Superior General for the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Uganda, said the topic addresses the spiritual needs of consecrated women by focusing on formation and the protection of religious identity. The association includes members from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia. Sr. Kyomugisha noted that the charisms of each congregation remain relevant to their mission, but emphasized that identity must precede mission.

• “The diaconate means service”: Spiritans Provincial Superior Tells 16 at Ordination in Kenya

  Sixteen deacons were ordained on September 18 at St. John the Evangelist Holy Ghost Parish in the Archdiocese of Nairobi. The group includes thirteen members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans) and three members of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). Fr. Fredrick Elima Wafula, the Spiritans provincial superior for Kenya and South Sudan, addressed the new deacons during the ceremony. He told the men that the diaconate is defined by service to the world, the altar, and the people of God. He noted that their years of formation required perseverance and reliance on God's grace. Fr. Wafula advised the deacons to practice readiness, collaboration, and service. He encouraged them to be prepared to listen, learn, and adapt to wherever they are sent. He stated that the success of their ministry would be measured by how many people experience Christ through their service rather than by their personal recognition.

• “Be countercultural”: Catholic Bishop in Kenya Urges Spiritans, Redemptorists to Emulate their Founders at Ordination

  Bishop George Muthaka of the Diocese of Garissa urged newly ordained deacons from the Congregation of the Holy Spirit and the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer to live countercultural lives. He specifically encouraged the Redemptorists to emulate St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori by choosing simplicity and service over prestige and comfort. The bishop noted that Liguori, a lawyer, rejected the values of his time to preach to the vulnerable. He also called on the Spiritans to follow the example of Venerable Claude-François Poullart des Places.
