History

A Christian community took root at Naples in the 1st century AD, and in the 10th century the diocese there was raised to an archdiocese. Today the Archdiocese of Naples (Italian: Arcidiocesi di Napoli; Neapolitan: Arcidiocesi 'e Napule); Latin: Archidioecesis Neapolitana) is a Latin archdiocese of the Catholic Church in southern Italy, its see in Naples. Two of its archbishops, Paul IV and Innocent XII, were elected pope, and in 2004 it counted c. 1,600,000 baptized people.
