History

Eight miles east of Naples, in the part of Campania once called Terra Laboris (Liburia), lies the Latin diocese of Acerra (Latin: Dioecesis Acerrarum). The see dates from the 11th century and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Naples. Within the diocese there is one priest for every 2,436 Catholics.

    Rome conference marks 10th anniversary of Father Gabriele Amorth's death A conference held Sept. 16 at the Basilica of St. Mary Queen of Apostles in Rome commemorated the 10th anniversary of the death of Father Gabriele Amorth. The event, titled “Father Gabriele Amorth: The Living Legacy for the Church and Our Time,” was organized by the International Association of Exorcists, the Society of St. Paul, and the magazine Famiglia Cristiana. Speakers discussed Amorth's life as an exorcist, his spirituality, and his work against occultism. Father Francesco Bamonte, vice president of the International Association of Exorcists, reviewed the main stages of Amorth's ministry. He noted that Cardinal Ugo Poletti appointed the Pauline priest as an exorcist for the Diocese of Rome in 1985 after Amorth trained under Father Candido Amantini. Other presenters included Father Marcello Lanza, an exorcist from the Diocese of Acerra, Father Aldo Buonaiuto, a coordinator for the Pope John XXIII Community, and Father Stefano Stimamiglio, director of Famiglia Cristiana. The participants described Amorth as a spiritual guide who focused on alleviating suffering and communicating the faith.
